Adding mp4 Video?

From the feedback and questions I received from the iWebforMusicians website, I know that a lot of people do not see YouTube as the answer to their prayers. They want visitors to go to their website - not hang out on YouTube and post facetious comments. YouTube has become synonymous with cheap and nasty and has no place on a website promoting a quality product or service. Pitching a movie or a band performance via YouTube is a recipe for rejection.

There really does not need to be this negative stigma about YouTube and websites. YouTube is the most popular video hosting website on the internet. There are many, many large and professional websites that use YouTube videos on their sites. We have been using YouTube for our videos for years and we have only had positive experiences.

If comments are a concern, you can just disable comments (though comments can work in people's favours). If you don't want your video made available to the public, you can just make it private and only allow certain people to view it.

In the end, the goal is to have someone be able to view the video properly. YouTube does a great job with this. YouTube has A LOT of benefits to using it that some people don't even consider.

This is not meant to encourage Chris to use YouTube. But I just wanted to defend it a bit, because there really are tons of great reasons to use YouTube, and there is no reason to be discouraged from using it.

You can defend YouTube all you wish but the fact remains that many website owners just don't want it!

Google is actually becoming a lot more strict with YouTube, and inevitably, some EW users will fall foul of the new regs, get disillusioned and quit web design forever. We don't want that - do we?

Google actually provides a solution that I keep forgetting about and it is free - or very reasonably priced for more storage.

Anybody who has a Gmail account (and who hasn't?) can sign up for Google Drive. It is a form of private hosting which will allow a fair amount of storage for those who don't want their videos to go completely out of their control and lose their website visitors to YouTube.

15GB for free, 100GB for $4.99 per month and 200GB for $9.99. 15GB may be enough for those with a few small videos and who delete them when they are past their sell by date. The maximum file size is for an individual file is 10GB which should be more than enough for most purposes.

I have at least a dozen Gmail accounts. I wonder if I could get 15GB for free with each one? Maybe I could open a 1000 Gmail accounts and start my own movie company?

Here's a link to a fairly comprehensive rundown on Google Drive...

http://www.internetmarketingduru.com/using-google-drive-for-online-video-hosting-and-streaming/

As far as actually playing the files on a website is concerned, one of the best solutions is SublimeVideo...

http://sublimevideo.net/modular-player

... which is free in its basic form.

Interestingly enough, it will play videos hosted on Vimeo and YouTube but, more importantly, it has the features we all need to start incorporating if we want to stay afloat in the ocean of web design.

Nowadays we need to have a player that will present an MD file for "normal" use, HD for full screen playback and a smaller format for mobile devices. It is also responsive for use in dynamic layouts. Check it out here...

http://sublimevideo.net

Up until now my solution for client websites that require fast loading on all devices, and the serving up of the appropriate movie size, has been to have three players - each set to prevent preload - so that only the splash images have to load with the page. I then use media queries to show the appropriate player and hide the other two.

The above tomfoolery and trickery is obviously beyond the skills of the average EW user so it will be interesting to see if SublimeVideo provides the same result with less stress on the brain cells.

Appreciate the feedback from both of you. I really like SublimeVideo... based on their website. I'll let you know how things work out.

Hey Roddy, it's something I'll look into. I'm going away for a few days so won't be able to dig into things further till next week. Looks like rather than using Apple's HTTP Live Streaming codec (with .m3u8), I'd be better to just encode two files each for mp4 and WebM - one high-res, one low-res (for mobile). If that's the case, I can at least start by just adding a few files to EasyWeb's assets and see how it works. Once I get the hang of things, I'll have to figure out how much storage space I need and go from there. You're right that eventually I'll be deleting the big file so I might be able to stay within a decent size allotment. Looks like mp4 + Flash is another option? Meaning I'd only have to upload a couple MP4's for each video and let the Flash plugin take care of those with incompatible browsers? Is there a downside to this vs WebM? I'm still reading up on all this while designing my webpages and now have the Sublime Video forum to comb through.

If this is the way to go, using a third-party player like Sublime Video, JW Player, Video JS, etc., I wonder if that's something EasyWeb could integrate... or at least point people towards in some kind of formal way...

Hey Paul,

I just tried doing what you suggested below with both an H.264 .mov file and a mp4 file. In both cases, when I hit apply to the HTML code, my audio starting playing but there was no video and no player. No way to control it or turn it off. Would this only work by publishing the site? I haven't signed up for hosting yet.

Nonetheless, as mentioned previously, I'll probably be trying with a third-party player.

If you want to just put a quicktime move up, export as a .mov and;
1) Drag the movie file to the assets list
2) Put an HTML Snippet on your page and put this code in it;

3) Go back to assets list and right click on your .mov file and select 'Copy Relative Path'.
4) Replace the file.mov string in the HTML Snippet by pasting the relative path you just copied

The downside to using flash fallback is that the player will use flash in Firefox. The upside is that it will play in out dated browsers.

I suppose it's possible to have a widget for creating these players but the user will still have to deal with the different file types and sizes and the poster images.

From reading the posts in this forum, most of the users are struggling to create basic sites and don't seem too eager to use code entry. This will change through time and I'm sure a lot of them will become more adventurous.

I was quite surprised by the number of iWeb users who would go the extra mile to get what they wanted on their websites. Really all it requires is the ability to copy and paste and some good step by step instructions. Of those who followed the instructions in my ebook, the only ones who required help had made errors in file paths and/or had uploaded the assets to the wrong place.

You would use something like this...

src="http://www.domain.com/FolderName/MovieName.mp4"
controller="true"
autoplay="false"
loop= "false"
scale="aspect">

I tried out Google Drive and it seems to work fine for movie sharing. Here are the options...

This is what I got when I clicked the link I sent to myself...

... and it can be played full screen.

Its a lot quicker and more convenient for sharing movie previews than creating a web page. Just drag the file into the Google Drive folder in the Home folder and then select this in the drop down...

Select the movie file, choose the sharing option, save and then copy the link. It should be easy enough to manage your files and keep the total under 15GB since they are all presented to you in a list.

Can someone please help me with the HTML Snippet Widget, getting Sublime Video player to work. sublimevideo.net

I don't yet have hosting and am testing by Publishing to Folder. I hope that will suffice for the moment. Appears it is, as the poster image is at least coming through.

Using their test videos, I copied this into the Head Code as directed:

Then on my video page, I dragged in a HTML Snippet and pasted in the following code:

But I only see the poster. No video.

To use SublimeVideo you need to signup and register a site. Then you can get your site "token" by going to "My Sites" after login...

Hover the cursor over the power button to reveal the token. Drag over the code and then copy (command c)

Now paste it (command v) into this line of code...

... and this into an HTML Snippet...

[code][/code]

It will NOT work in EW or when published to a local folder.

Hey Roddy,

Success! My mistake was that I had left out a colon after http. I just used the Loader code provided under Settings from SublimeVideo, and added http: as follows:

I then copied that into the Head code on the home page, as well as the movie page.

Why are you suggesting this instead?

CODE: SELECT ALL

No difference I guess.

Thanks man,

Chris

I just use https because the video file URLs were secure ones. It doesn't really matter.

So I'm using Sublime Video. Everything's working fine. But I have a question, and it probably pertains to HTML snippet possibilities. I'd like to show 4 different movie clips on the same page, in the same X/Y parameters, and don't know how to do this. I want to list Clip 1, Clip 2, Clip 3, etc. and just have the movie change, nothing else. I can enable each line of text as a Hyperlink, dupe my pages, and embed each video in a different page that way. But that feels inefficient. And if I do choose to add comments to the bottom using the Disqus option, just makes sense to have one page - not 5. Here's a screenshot (and yes, I'm going to change the picture that covers the girl's' face). Any ideas?

Also, you can see from the photo that Tabs are still not working in the text box. The 5 clips, starting with Rough Cut, should all be aligned.
Lastly, a line containing a single space throws off my alignment in rows. I have two text boxes to the left, one starting with "Producer/Writer...", the other with "Cleetche", etc. Only way to keep them lined up is placing something like a period or a dash in there. I can remove them last minute then publish and it seems to hold. But if I do any editing within EW, it throws things off.

Thanks!

Chris
