Managing varying height with Master template

I created my site before the master templates were developed. I see it's fairly easy to add to existing pages, and therefore redesign my site accordingly. But how do we manage height, especially as it pertains to Footers, when each page varies? Do I have to pick the longest page and set my Master according to that? That's not going to look very attractive on the short pages.

| I leave my master at it's size, then extend individual pages using a text box if I need more room on a page. | |
