Viewing Size Matters

Size Matters

User: MacDavidson 9 years ago
Hey Guys,

I have a very important page with Customer Reviews, but the size of the photos makes for slow loading. Is there an easy app that anyone could recommend to lessen the size without loosing valuable clarity?

Secondly
I have a Wordpress blog http://edinburghdrivinglessons.org does anyone know if its possible to add this into my EW site in the same format that the Nabble Forum can?

Roddy recommended Easy Crop to me a while back: http://www.yellowmug.com/easycrop/

It costs about $11 but for me it's been brilliant. Simple, fast and has the ability to transcode the file into other formats with scalable quality.

I'm using it more and more to make my image sizes less and in the format I want.

Why not use the apps on your computer :

iPhoto
Preview
iWeb (?)

And if you have a lot of images, use automator.

I've found that Preview works really well for using Instant Alpha to remove objects, backgrounds from logos and images, then exporting as .png so you keep the transparency/removed background and put on top of another image or shape in EW.

If however you are trying to do what I think Mac is asking, reducing the file size without too much compromise on quality of the image, I don't know that iPhoto or iWeb can do that? You can certainly Crop images in iPhoto, but that's not the same thing. You can also crop images in Preview and export them as a jpeg, changing their quality... which would in fact work! The only downside is that you don't know what you are going to get until you open the image to check for quality and INFO the file size.

Easy Crop lets you preview the end result before you take the image, it'll also tell you the new file size as you adjust the quality. For me It works really well. You can play with a demo version to see if you like it before committing.

As for iWeb... are there still bootleg copies going around? The last mac I bought didn't include it!

Cant say I know that much about iPhoto, which is probably shameful... So I can crop the photo and change the pixel size in iPhoto too?
Also, what is Automator?

And why not practice and see the results?

Ooooh, there is lots to play with from those comments.
I will give Easy Crop a trial and I think it will do the job nicely from the description you gave.
As for Automator; I shamefully did not even know it existed, however, I can see a massive use for this in the future, especially the watermark, since there is lots of plagiarism goes on amongst Instructors around here.
I appreciate the time you both put into this, many thanks.

iPhoto is much like iTunes in that it used to be useful but now tries to do too much. It's almost as much a waste of time as it is to launch Photoshop to process a few images.

I use apps like EasyCrop and ImageWell - along with Preview - to do about 99% of my image processing. The images are cropped and resized in less time than it takes to launch these multi purpose apps.

I use EasyCrop many times a day - every day - and it has paid for itself over and over. The developers also have an app called [url=http://www.yellowmug.com/snapndrag/]SnapNDrag[/urlwhich is free in it's basic form.

Because of the ease in which apps can be developed for OS X - as opposed to Windows - three's a huge range of free/cheap apps around. A good place to look for them is MacUpdate where you will see user comments and ratings. One useful feature is that members post similar software so that you can compare alternatives. Put "easy crop" into the search box and you will see what I mean.
