Viewing Changing Web Site domains

Changing Web Site domains

User: Tim S. 9 years ago
My current website is written in iWeb08. It's a great site and does most of I want it to except it is so old I can't work on it with current apple OSX machines.

I would like to migrate to Everweb but I want to keep the old site running until the very last minute.
I want to fully test the new site before taking down the old one.
On conversion day i would like to have whatever mechanisms point the world to my old site now point them to the new one.
In the interim testing phase the company name, etc would be generic so as to not attract search engine attention etc.

I would like Everweb to host the parallel testing site.
How do go about making the transition, ie, deleting the old site and breathing life into the new one?

With EverWeb there is a sub directory field under the Publish Settings screen (see File menu->Sub Directory). This lets you publish your site to a sub directory location on your server which means it won't overwrite your existing iWeb site and no one will know where your site is located unless you give them the name of the sub directory (this includes search engines).

The publishing video describes the sub directory field in more detail if you want to learn more about.

You can purchase EverWeb Standalone (and upgrade to EverWeb + Hosting when you are ready) or you can go ahead and purchase the EverWeb + Hosting right now. If purchasing EverWeb + Hosting now make sure to select the option 'keep it with my existing registrar and point it to RAGE Web Hosting when I'm ready.'. Enter your current domain name. Nothing will change until you update your name servers as I describe below.

Both version of EverWeb will let you publish to your current FTP server.

Once you are happy with your website you will publish it to your EverWeb accounting. Now you update your name servers (which we send you once your purchase) with your current domain registrar. Once this is done it will take up to 48 hours (usually in just a few hours and instantly for anyone who has never visited your site before) for people to start seeing your EverWeb site. During this transition period some people will see your old iWeb site, others will see your EverWeb site. After about 24-48 hours everyone will see your EverWeb site.

More details about updating your name servers can be found here.

Let me know if you have any questions.
