Another navigation question: how to disable link to top level "folder"

User: UncleTod 11 years ago
I have a navigation bar across the top that currently displays the "Home" "Our Family" "Our Activities" across the top. I consider these to be the top-level. Under the second two are child folders where the folders have content. I'd like to disable the links in these top-level texts, making them inactive, so that the child pages are displayed and are active. A last resort that is onerous in the extreme is to go into each index.html file and edit href="../our-family/index.html" to href="index.html" whose effect will be to redirect the click back to the home page.

Is there any way to disable the link in any of the navigation text? Please note that I want the text to continue to be displayed, just no link.

Edit: I just looked at the nav bar on the forum pages. It has five top level menu items, white text in a blue background. Four of these are not active but have down triangles, indicating child pages. Clicking on Services, for instance, dr0ps down My Services, Order New Services, and View Available Addons, each of which have active links that link to specific pages. This is how I'd like my menu bar to work.

See this page for info about using a meta refresh to direct visitors to the first actual page of a directory…

http://everwebcodebox.com/layout/directories.html

Note that the EverWeb Codebox and Widgetbox sites use this method.

I see in another topic you had trouble moving directory folders in the left column of EW and keeping them in the top level.

When you drag a directory to a new location, you will see a line with a loop at the left hand end. Before dr0pping the folder in position, drag it hard to the left and you will see the loop move to the left. Now dr0p the folder and it will be in the top level.

Its actually easy to do and hard to explain! I couldn't figure it out at first and had to drag the directories to the bottom like you were doing. Perhaps a short instructional video would explain the method a lot better?

Hi Roddy, Thanks for the link. I was actually thinking that I ought to visit your site anyway since you have posted a wealth of knowledge about EW there. Your tip works as advertised and things are good here. Your other suggestion about changing the level of a directory doesn't seem to work for me. No matter how "hard" I move the folder to the left, the loop won't go any further than the folder's level. Dragging to the bottom and then to the left seems to be the only way. Yes, a short video would be helpful.
