Viewing Management of Large Sites

Management of Large Sites

User: John D. 11 years ago
On a single domain, I have a 6500-person genealogy page-set, plus over 1,000 photos (which is a fraction of what I have accumulated over my 85-year life), plus some other pages. Most of the photos are on iweb pages. Naturally, updating this website (via FTP) takes several hours.

I am thinking of purchasing a second domain and splitting the photos from the genealogy pages. Also considering the pros and cons of using icloud.

I don't need auto slideshow; maybe not even manual slideshow if it improves efficiency.

Whatever I do, I would like to make the site(s) mobile-friendly.

I would like to view your comments and suggestions as to the best plan.

Site is http://jdeyulia.com

Hi John -

You have some text formatting problems on the entry page. The text is running all down the left side.
Sorry for the bad news :-)

Did you want to use EverWeb to create a new website?

I was in the process of updating and restructuring the site using iweb, when I decided to switch to EverWeb. That's when the Homepage got screwed up. (The homepage was created in iweb NOT EverWeb, I just decided to switch horses in the middle of a rebuild). As a part of the rebuild, I want to make the site more efficient, hence the interest in replacing auto slide shows with manual.

Right now I'm playing around with Imagewell and Manual Sliders thanks to the info I picked up from this discussion Group.

But I'm still trying to decide whether to pack all my photos and a humungous genealogy package into a single domain, or would it be best to split them into two domains. Separate domains would facilitate updating. The question is: Is it worth the added expense. The answer may be dependent upon how more efficient EverWeb can be vs. iweb. I'm hoping for some info from experienced EverWeb users.

BTW, it would be nice if EW had a marquee (scrolling text) widget.

Hi John,

For scrolling text, you can use Roddy's widget.

I don't think it will be necessary to break the site into different domains.

To make the site more user friendly and efficient, what I would do is make good use of EverWeb's built-in Image Gallery widget. This widget comes with a built-in optimizer, which will reduce the size of your images and thus increase the page's load time. If you wanted to optimize the images BEFORE loading them into EverWeb, that may make your user experience even better, but this might be a lot of work if you do have a very large number of images.

The most economical way to handle a large site is to use sub folders rather than sub domains or multiple domains.

If you create each sub section of the site in a separate project file, updating and uploading changes will go a lot faster.

Us the EverWeb self generation navigation to navigate each section and create a simple, separate navigation for the visitor to get to the other sections.

Thank you, Roddy & Jeremy.

That was just the advice I was looking for. I will rebuild my site implementing both your suggestions.

John
