Everweb download speed vs iWeb 08

I would like to migrate my website from Web08 to Everweb.
This site has a LOT of very large jpegs. They fill the screen with very high resolution images.
The site is very quick. There is no delay in download.

My current protocol is to publish the site then optimize the folder in Webcrusher before uploading to website.
I am thinking the site is blinding fast because of this optimization.

An earlier thread I posted on this forum indicated I could optimize the images individually in Webcrusher then upload to Everweb. I am curious to see what the difference would be in user experience for a similar site in developed in Everweb vs my old protocol.

Is there a way to construct a site in Everweb then test it online before taking down my original website?

Secondly, if the Everweb test is viable is there a way to convert that site to automatically replace the original website?

Does the customer experience (download speed) have anything to do with how/where the site is hosted?

There are a couple of ways to go about optimizing your site so that the download speed will be as fast as possible. One option would be to ensure the images are optimized before bringing them into EverWeb. I personally prefer this method. What I do is resize my images in an image editor, so that they are the exact dimensions that I want them to be in EverWeb. I also include an image at twice the size for retina users.

The other option is to use the Image Gallery widget in EverWeb, which includes an option for optimizing the photos.

Also, feel free to optimize the images in WebCrusher before loading them into EverWeb (no matter which method you are using). Put all images into a folder and optimize them in WebCrusher at the same time.

As for testing your site online before launching, you could publish it to a temporary folder on your web server. If you are not sure how to set one up, you can talk to your web host and they can help you do it. If you are using an EverWeb + Hosting account, all you need to do is type something into the Subdirectory field and publish. Just remember to remove that subdirectory when you are ready to publish the site to your main website.

User download speed will have something to do with where they are located in relation to the site, as well as their download speed. For the most part, if you make it so that your images are optimized and you are not making the user download a very large web-page, the experience will be good no matter what.
