Need some help with a crazy URL

User: Courtney H. 12 years ago
When this site was run in iWeb, it created a strange set of links. The URL to get to the front page was:
www.rhsclassof69.com/rhs_class_of_69/welcome.html
It worked.

After moving it to EverWeb for the client, the URL is now normal and everything works correctly.
www.rhsclassof69.com

The problem I'm having is people who have saved the old URL as a favorite are getting something similar to the current front page but with a white background and no images. If you go to that messy URL at the top you can see what I mean.
I've changed the home page from "Welcome" to "Home" and created a "Bad URL" page in a directory "rhs_class_of_69" with a sub-page "welcome" to show those using the old URL how to correct it.
Doesn't work. It keeps going to the current front page with the missing stuff. You can see what they should get at www.rhsclassof69.com/rhs_class_of_69/Welcome/

The problem is the use of "Welcome.HTML" in the bad URL. If I put in www.rhsclassof69.com/rhs_class_of_69/welcome.html and then remove the "HTML" at the end I can get to the page okay.
Since those saved links have the "HTML" at the end it's not going to the correct page.

I've looked at the source code as best I can but "view source" in the browser is not a good way to do that.

Any ideas?
This actually all makes sense if you read it slowly :-)

Hi Courtney,

This video should do what you need but you'll need to be using the EverWeb Hosting solution.

Thanks Paul. I agree and that was the first thing I wanted to do but the client wants to stay on GoDaddy because they just renewed for a year.
I'd bite the cost but...

Pasting a meta refresh into the head code of the page will create a redirect…

http://everwebcodebox.com/layout/directories.html

If you want a page without the .html extension you can create it using a directory rather then a standard page.

Thanks Roddy. I'm having problems finding the offending page with the way EverWeb constructs the structure for the server.
The bad URL is looking for WELCOME.HTML and I can only make the new subdirectory directory WELCOME so it defaults to wherever it's finding the other one. If I could locate it I can swap that file with the one pointing out the error and how to correct it.
Sigh.

It's not easy sorting these things out when you are running blind and can't see the files on the server!

I'm putting this up to maybe help someone else. Everweb doesn't gracefully handle some errors. That's okay - it will the way they are cranking out the updates.

My problem (story above) was it wasn't actually returning to the front page, it was showing a 404 error that happened to use part of the front page. That was fun figuring out.
If you use GoDaddy you can change the 404 Error from "front page" to either default or a custom one. I changed it to the Welcome I had been trying to reach all along.
Problem solved. Now people using the old iWeb double URL are taken to the custom 404 page and told how to fix that craziness.

Then the whole site got corrupted. That's another story but I save backups every time I work on any site, so it just took another long upload and we're back in the game.
