Where are my EverWeb files stored?

User: Ben L. 9 years ago
I'm wanting to back up my new EverWeb website projects. Where can the actual data be found on my computer? Is there any way I can, in some form of preference, assign where I want my data to be saved?

We have a tutorial for backing up your EverWeb site, however, make sure to copy the project file and not remove it from the folder indicated in the video, otherwise it won't appear in your recent projects folder.

I use iCloud to sync any project files between my iMac and my laptop.

My method is described HERE under "Syncing Domain Files with iCloud" for iWeb domain.sites2 files but it's exactly the same for an EW project file.

Note that I don't keep the original project file in the iCloud Sync folder - just a copy of the latest version.

Just lost all of my website files. EW crashed and when it reopened, all my files were gone. I downloaded the latest beta but still no files.
User: Roddy 9 years ago
Did you actually save the project at any point before the crash? If not, there will be no files.

Yes. I saved it many times over the 5 days I worked on. It always loaded, until after it crashed. At that point, the publish details remained but all pages had disappeared.

Does the site name still appear in the Projects window?

When you right click the site name and select "Show On DIsk" what does it show?

Going on the assumption that you are posting in this thread because you followed the video tutorial here, did you move your project files out of the folder they were originally in and place them in another location?

If so, they won't appear in recent projects anymore. You can double click them to open them, or you can place them back in the folder you took them out of.

Thank you for the tutorial, however, the tutorial does not show where the actual folder is located.
In my case, the project file no longer appears on the project window in EverWeb and i am trying to locate it.
Can you be more specific as to where EW places this project file?
or perhaps what is the extension so I can maybe look for it that way?
I am the only one who uses my computer
I dont understand why it doesnt show on the project window but I am positive I must have moved that folder by mistake and would love to locate it.
Thank you

The project files are stored in the EverWeb folder which is in the Application Support folder in the user library.

Browse to this folder by holding down the option key while in the Finde Go menu.

The file extension is .everweb.

Open the EverWeb Projects window and click on the small up/down arrows to the right of the project name. Then select "Show On Disk" from the contextual menu.

My main computer is out for repairs so I assembled a laptop as a backup. I couldn't access the EverWeb folder in my external Time Machine drives because this was a different computer and wouldn't work following the usual steps. After hours of searching and experimenting the following finally provided me access:

Open the application called Terminal
Copy and paste or type the following: defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles true
Hit the Enter/Return Key
Type the following: killall Finder

You will now be able to see all hidden files. Library within your user account will likely be grayed out but you can still open it and go to:

Library/Application Support/EverWeb

You can then copy your project file and create a copy wherever you need it. To reset Finder so that hidden files can't be seen again Force Quit Finder and your Finder windows will go back to looking like usual I hope this helps.

Matt, you should not do this. It just adds over complexity. Use the Go menu from the finder while holding down the option key on your keyboard to access the library folder. Or use the go to folder option in that same menu.

You do not need to make all files visible. That's just going to cause a lot of clutter in your finder and may cause you to accidentally delete files you shouldn't.

If there is another way to access hidden files in the hidden Library on a backup disk using Time Machine that was setup by another computer I am interested in learning. The instructions you provided do not accomplish this, I tried it many times. The procedure you described will not access Time Machine on the external drives, just the same computer's main drives.

Also, I have an edit to my previous instructions. To hide all of those files again resetting Finder does not work. You have to enter the code again in Terminal repeating the same process but replacing the word "true" with the word "false."

Hi Matt,

I found these instructions for you.

1. Navigate to you Time Machine disk in the Finder but do not enter into Time Machine.

2. When you are on the date you want, navigate to the User folder.

3. Open Terminal and type

cd

nd a space, drag and drop your user name folder inside the Terminal window. That completes the cd command for you and press return.

You are now into your user folder inside your Time Machine.

4. Type the following in terminal to go to the Library folder;

cd Library

5. Now type in Terminal;

open

This should open the Finder window for you with your files in Library. From there you can navigate to Application Support and then your EverWeb folder.
