Two people working on site?

User: spyboynola 12 years ago
hopefully this is a silly question. Can two people have EW open and working at two different locations as long as only one is publishing at a time? and they are not publishing same file? I have three different project files for one website, can one person be working on clubs1 and someone somewhere else working on clubs2 as long as only one person is publishing to server ( EW ) at a time.
IF not- if they were under two separate accounts but publishing to same website would that work?

Hope that because it was Sunday no one had an answer. Now we don't work at the same time as in another post I was warned about two people at once, I was wondering if I had over understood this warning. It would be nice to work on different project files at the same time, even if it meant purchasing another whatever was necessary to have this ability..no problem with only publishing from one location. Any help ?

I know this doesn't directly answer your question, but I have my EW file in dropbox and work out of that at two different locations during the week. I never have the file open at the same time however so I'm not sure if that would work. But I do know as long as you save and exit EW on one computer you can pick up right were you left off on the other (using dropbox)

There a little more on that here

Sorry it wasn't an exact answer but it works perfect for working on my site from two different computers.

If you had the file open at the same time on two different locations, even though you might be working on different pages, my thought is that it may cause some "file conflicts" especially if you're using dropbox for the sync. If some small background files are recognized being open on two different computers at the same time, it might force dropbox to create "conflict/duplicate" versions which may cause issues with your EW project file.

Just my thought, don't know for sure if this is true.

It's just a question of organizing the structure of your site.

Create three sub sites - each with their own folder on the server - on separate project files. You would also need to create a Home section which would be published to the root folder.

Each person can then have one project file on their computer and publish to the sub folder (directory) on the server.

You would need to plan the navigation to suit this setup. One way - and probably the easiest - is to use the EverWeb self generating navigation to create the menu for each sub section of the site.
Each sub section navigation would have a dummy page or directory setup as a link back to the Home page.

The Home section would have navigation links to the sub sections only - not their individual pages. The Home section would consist of theHome (index.html) page plus a blank page for each sub section which is a redirect to that section.

See this page for how to set up a page or directory with a meta refresh to forward the dummy pages to the sub sections and also to create a return link to the Home page from these sub sections…

All this is probably as clear as mud and you need to think about the concept. Do what web designers do and plan the site structure on a piece of paper before attempting to actually do it!
