Viewing Gallery Captions

Gallery Captions

User: Roddy 9 years ago
I have a long time friend from the old iWeb days who told me the only reason he hasn't yet switched to EverWeb is that he needs a thumbnail gallery/slideshow with the ability to add descriptive captions to both the thumbs and the large images to display products.

Although he doesn't know code from cantonese he can manipulate images and do a bit of copy and paste. Here's a demo of the the widget I made to prove to him that EverWeb is the way to go.

The actual slideshow is responsive so the full size images can be any width.

It won't suit those who want to drag a few hundred assorted images onto the page at once to create one of those messy iWeb style galleries that nobody has time to looks at anyway. It does create a neat gallery with any number of rows/columns and an easy way to add two or more caption lines.

Having created this type of gallery with code in the past, I was surprised who quick and easy it was using the widget. Now I'm wondering, "why didn't I think of this before?"

Roddy, thanks for this widget, it is very useful.

I did a quick look at this image gallery and it does appear to be very well done and well suited for EverWeb.

It would require some modification within EverWeb to allow for the captions but we can make the implementation much easier to do within EverWeb (without the need to enter actual HTML).

Guys, if this is something you really want, post here. Remember though feature requests need to be balanced with other features (such as the blog which is what we are focusing on). So let us know your priorities by posting here.

I've been using PhotoSwipe for a long time - mainly on the mobile version of professional photographers' websites. They don't have any problem with the extra effort of creating the same sized thumbnails which is the key to a good presentation.

The main thing I like about it is the slideshow. The image captions are derived from the alt tags so it's good for SEO as well.
The actual thumb captions I added myself so that the number of lines can be set by the user.

I think a lot of users are expecting a clone of the iWeb slideshow. I never used this myself and don't think much of it as it tries to do too much. It's a kind of a Jack of all trades and doesn't do any one thing particularly well. Most of the examples I saw were downright messy with a jumble of different shaped thumbs.

The EverWeb slider - being based on Galleria - could have the option to include info in the alt and title tags but the Galleria info button is so small that it's ineffective and most visitors don't realise they can click it to pop up the info window. I did add captions to a Galleria slider for a client a while back but how I can't remember.

@ Jumbo

I made a page about PhotoSwipe on the Mobile section of EverWeb Code box a while back where you can see what it looks like in its original form…

http://everwebcodebox.com/mobile/image-grid.html

There's also a link to download the files for anyone who wants to get them.

It would be great to have this widget but if it is a question of this or the blog, I would prefer the blog first...:)

I would appreciate caption capability very much. One of the reasons I wanted to get away from iWeb is because I have to go through a tedious update process, one part of which is my slideshow, which is a separate program that plugs in an HTML snippet. This is very inconvenient. I was excited about EverWeb's built-in slideshow feature but now that I found out it doesn't have captions, I may have to go back to my old snippet thing, which is several extra steps and unstable. I vote for captions.

The major downside to drag and top style galleries and sliders is the fact that they don't allow the user any means of inserting the alt or title attribute without which you might as well be creating a blank page as far as the search engines are concerned.

Inserting the images using HTML may be tedious but it does allow this essential info to be added. Many galleries and sliders create the captions from the alt or tile attribute for each image - or both. This is the ideal way of adding captions - both from the point of view of humans and the search engine spiders.

We're addressing this very soon. The solution will provide an option for alternative image text. No HTML required! :)

I realise that we all have different needs for this, but here's my two pennyworth........On my somewhat antiquated iWeb site ( http://TheViewFromTheDartmouthOffice.com ) I post between two and four hundred pictures each month. Some months I even manage to caption them all. The photos are usually imported by dragging and dropping around ten at a time and then captioned separately within iWeb. Would it be possible to have the option of dragging the photo description from within iPhoto to become the caption in Everweb ?
The image gallery implementation is very important to me and whilst I don't expect a like for like recreation of iWeb, an inability to drag and drop multiple pix would make it a difficult decision to changeover to Everweb (which I am very keen to do).

This widget can be used to create a gallery with captions and a lightbox slideshow…

Roddy, I'm dragging this thread out of the grave. I love photoswipe and would like to implement it on my mobile site. Your everwebcodebox page doesn't give too many instructions, nor does the photoswipe website. The html is easy. The java script is pretty self-explanatory too, except this (simple-inheritance.min.js) wasn't part of the download, so where is that? And where's the css? Any chance you might update this page. There's a couple dead links even at the bottom. Thanks!

The EverWeb Codebox download uses the non jQuery version of PhotoSwipe. Now that EverWeb forces us to use jQuery on every page of the site you might as well use the jQuery version.
I have sent you an example HTML doc and all the required files. This uses an "insider" version which doesn't require any of these extra files like "simple-inheritance".

Make sure you use EverWeb V1.6 to create this as V1.7 is useless for checking the files via a code editor. It looks like those of us who want to use code entry are being gradually squeezed out.

If anybody else wants to create an actual gallery with PhotoSwipe - rather than just a photo grid - there is a widget…

Brilliant! Took a little bit of figuring out (had to find the head code), but I've got it working perfectly with the test photos. Thanks

One question: how do I amend the CSS? I want to remove the border. I tried copying and pasting into Text Edit, amending the code, then saving as an html file, then changing the extension to .css. Obviously... didn't work.

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out.

Roddy, I'm having an issue with photoswipe on my iphone. If I tap a pic and turn the phone sideways, it plays fine in landscape mode. But if I turn the phone again to portait and back, it screws up. Happens everytime. You can test for yourself here:
