The images you used in the Slider are about 20MB each. That will take a very long time to download for users. Resize them so that they have a smaller size. You are probably using the original, high resolution images.

When you dragged them into EverWeb did you get a dialog asking you to convert them to lower resolution images?

Thanks Paul.
That's what I figured and yes I did get a dialog and I did choose the lower resolution option. I will take a look at all the photos on the site and re-size as necessary. Any suggestion on what size I should be going for?

I made this mistake when building my website too. Simply due to time and wanting to walk before I could run I used to drag and drop images/photos straight into EverWeb. While I hear EW has some sort of compression/file size reduction built-in, it doesn't seem to make enough of a difference to really large images to help them load quickly. The bottom line is that large file sizes are bad for webpage load speeds.

I consider myself a novice at building websites but one thing that works for me is a little app called EasyCrop. I am sure there are others out there but I was recommend this one, it's cheap and it has solved my problem.

Every time I make an image using Pages or Keynote (I'm not a Photoshop or advanced graphics app user) or want to add a photo to EW, I select it, then copy and paste into EasyCrop. You can then draw over the image and select the quality/conversion into JPEG or PNG etc. I tend to either use PNG or JPEG set somewhere between 50% and 75%. Just look at the image as it adjusts in quality and you'll see how far you can go before it looks poor. It also tells you the file size as you change the settings. Then just drag the image into EW's Assets.

You can see from my website, I have a large slideshow on my homepage too. Not quite the size of yours but I have lots of other images loading on this page... it loads fairly quickly.

Paul,

the Everweb dialog box asking if I want to convert images into low resolution does suddenly not appear anymore. How do I get it back? What did I do to make it disappear? I have inadvertently loaded a bunch of 20 MB picture files into my Assets.

As a feature request, would it be conceivable that we get some discretion as to how low resolution everweb transfroms pictures into? I have got some on the site I am building that only look good with a bit higher quality.

Thank you very much!

Malte

the best way i've found for making photos load fast is in photoshop, open the image in photoshop (for mac) press shift+alt+command+s to save for web & devices, lots of settings for compressing and gives you a preview of the quality it will be, i've been able to reduce images from around 1MB to less than 100KB without out it looking pixelated.

another good fast and free app i've used is iResize, simple and easy to use.
