How to password-protect one of my pages

User: EdMcK 10 years ago
Not sure if anyone has the time to help me on this, but here goes. I want to collect the email addresses of people who visit my (EverWeb) site to take advantage of the free content I offer. The site address is www.powerboatguide.com, and the page I want to protect is the "Free Boat Reviews" page. The site is currently hosted by GoDaddy. When I called them regarding this issue I was told that I'd have to reconfigure my site files to make this possible, and even then it was no easy task. Okay, fair enough, I'm ready to do the work, but I'm not sure exactly what it is I need to do. The issue, I believe, comes down to all those PDF files that are linked on the Free Access page -- I think I'm supposed to put them in a separate file, recreate the page links, and then upload the entire site to the GoDaddy server. But what then?

Sad to say, all of this is a bit over my head. Just thought I'd check in here at the forum and see if anyone can get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Hello Ed

Nice site! Looks like you already ask for a name and email on your site... That would be the best way to do it. Create another form for the info. your talking about and hopefully your visitors will think the info. you produce is worth giving you their email....

I did notice that you have a Everweb logo stuck in the middle of your authors page, just thought it was odd. And the lists on a few of your pages goes down past the white background... maybe you could fix that by extending your content height by increasing the pixel length.... But on the other hand your TOC page is too long!

As far as the PDF's you just need to link them to files... So put a link on you page like... "All about big boats" then link it in the inspector, use the drop down menu to choose the file you want to use and it will upload it for you!

It's actually pretty easy...

You are probably looking for something like this…

http://everwebcodebox.com/info/file-download.html

It's better to have a separate form for data mining which only requires the visitor's name and email.
It would be more convenient if these response were directed to a separate mailbox since the names and addresses are going to be entered into a database and they don't require a reply.

The form referred to above uses a hidden input to redirect the visitor to a specific page after the form has been submitted. I find this more effective than an insipid "Thank You" notification.

I haven't tried the EW default contact form since I prefer to design my own. Perhaps it's possible to add this function in the java script?

Hi Ed. I use GoDaddy as well and have also password protected one of my pages. Go to www.cleetche.com, enter, then click on Private Viewing Room at the bottom. You'll see how it asks for a username and password. It's not hard to do at all and they have great telephone support people who should be able to walk you through the steps.

Basically, you need to log in to your account. Click on Web Hosting. Click the green Launch button to the right. Then under Files & FTP (the bar at the top), select File Manager. You'll have a column of your Directories on the left. It selects html by default. Keep it that way. Under Filename in the next column over, select the Directory you want to password protect. (So it does need to be an EW Directory, not a Page. I had to change this in EverWeb for it to work). Once selected, Click Permissions up top. Then Password Protect. Then it should be self-guiding from there. Just make sure you click OK when finished so your changes are saved. A key icon will appear beside your password protected Directory.

If you're still having trouble with this, give them a call like I said. And don't be fooled into thinking it's hard to pull off. It's not. Good luck!
