Viewing Widen my website

Widen my website

User: Kelly 10 years ago
Hi, I just noticed that my website is extremely skinny online. It does not take up the entire screen. I have tried to widen the page using the inspector but that does not help. My website is in the middle of the page with a lot of white space on both sides and it does not look right. Please help. Check it out here: www.kellymcgrifflaw.com

The page width is defined by your margins. What is your content width set at? Generally people go with 980px but this is entirely subjective. Just amend to your liking and then change for every page.

Can you show a screenshot of what it looks like in EverWeb so I can better understand what the issue is.

You can take a screenshot by holding down the COMMAND and SHIFT keys on your keyboard and then pressing the number 3. An image file will appear on your desktop, please post it here by pressing the Advanced tab.

To solve the problem, resize the browser window to the same width as your page.

Or make you page wider.

And then hope your visitors will do the same.

It's a common phenomena. You'll see it often in parking lots.

Small car have lots of space, while large cars can barely park between the lines.

I tried to wide the content width. That did not work. I do not want my website to look like its floating in the middle of a white page and widening the margins did not solve the problem. It only shifted my site to the right of the page but it does not fill in the entire web page like other sites (and my prior iweb) site.

I believe this is a clue. What is your Page Layout set at? You have the options of Centred, Dynamic or Left. Mine are set at Centred and I do not have the problem that you're having.

edit: If changing the setting doesn't solve your problem, I'd post a screenshot of what things look like in EverWeb – with Show Layout selected under Window. Make sure Page Details is showing in Inspector.

Below is what my settings are set out and my website views as shown in the screenshot above. It looks to just be floating in the middle of the screen rather than extending across the entire screen.

Also below please see what happens when I extend the width with a screen shot of the inspector window and my website.

By the way, is there a way to resize the Everweb window? Now that takes up my entire screen and I have to hide my toolbar to get to the options on the bottom and its quite frustrating. Thanks!

Sorry for all these posts, for some reason, although it gives me the option to attach several things at 1 times, it will only post one of them multiple times. Here are my original settings.

You need to show the layout by using the Window menu or do Shift/Command/L so that you can see the dividing line between the content and the browser background.

Then drag your content to stretch it out horizontally to fill the extra space you have added by increasing the content width.

I would tend not to use a content width as wide as 1200px as some visitors with narrow screens may have to scroll horizontally and most people detest doing that thing!

Why is her content centred when set to 800px wide, but justified left when set at 1200px though?

You must've designed it perfectly for 800 and maybe need to realign if you do decide to widen. Because it looks to me like your Safari preview is exactly the same as what you have in EW. No?

1200 stretches perfectly across my computer screen but I hate having to scroll left and right to read things also. Roddy, what width would you suggest? I guess maybe I did design it for 800 Christopher. That was what was the original setting when I started so I never messed with it until now.

The "standard" width is 980px. Here's some page layout guidelines...
