Viewing iweb vs everweb

iweb vs everweb

User: A B. 10 years ago
I am in the proces of looking at everweb. Sofar it looks good, though I still miss the 'feel' of iweb. there are so many integrated small features in iweb I got used to, it would be remarcable if that can be recreated. Still, it looks good and a serious replacement.
But, …
Can anyone tell me again please why I should abandon iweb just now. I know, it has been discontinued by Apple, but it still works properly. I see no reason to stop using it. But I might miss out on something here.
thank you so far.

Also, everweb is on version 1.0. Chances are that it will continue to grow even closer to iweb ánd add features on the way?
the rate of this dynamic will entice me to step over.

Can you be more specific on the small features? If we don't know what you want specifically, we can't add them.

Well in my opinion a big reason is that EverWeb creates retina websites meaning they look sharp on MacBook pro's with retina screens and all iOS and Android devices. iWeb can't, and will never be able to make these.

But besides that you can create mobile websites, faster loading pages, built in SEO, slide shows, mouse over affects, integrate with social media and so much more. We're really just at the beginning.

You're going to have to do it eventually, why not do it now when you aren't rushed for time?

Last year when Apple discontinued MobileMe they gave users a years noticed. It was discontinued on June 30 2012. We hadn't seen so many people sign up at once until June 30 and through the month of July. People literally going crazy because their site was down, even though they had a year to prepare. I'd hate to see you in a similar situation. For example you upgrade your OS, iWeb stops working and you need to update your site then and there.

Not trying to scare you, but I think a better question is, why isn't it a good time to switch over now?

Yes it will :)

Version 1.2 has a feature that will make updating your website so much easier. I think at that point it will be more time consuming NOT to switch over to EverWeb.

Even version 1.1 beta (see the announcements forum) has grouping and locking objects. This makes it much more efficient to design websites. Check it out!

Thanks,
all consideraties in spending money count.
What I mean with the many small things is the way iweb works. there isn't anything like it. it is just briljant software. Technically it may be different, but on the creative side, I can do magic with it.
I am sure that everweb will come close to that eventually. And on the outside it already does. That deserves a compliment I guess. It will be a matter of time, but more important, a matter of money, before I start using everweb.

Yes I can. I started looking at ever web, for real. So far I bounce on quite a few features that I miss, that I am used to in other software. Very standard command, f.e. for editing text etc.
I am very graphical orientated and therefor I create what is in my head. For this purpose iWeb was totally suited, because it could translate exactly what I was thinking. Everweb is definitely not there yet. But still, keep going, my sense is it will get there.

I am also a frequent Pages user (yes the previous version). This too is brilliant software which at Apple they made the mistake of stripping it down. Big mistake! fortunate the previous version still works (is it going the same direction as iWeb?).

But, here are a few first remarks that I collected in the first hour or so testing ever web, after which it suddenly crashed!. So number one is autosave!
[ ] autosave (top priority!)
[ ] fonts are not displayed in the font-list after selecting the text
[ ] only backspace works to delete text. not 'delete'
[ ] gradient fill to transparent: in iWeb (and other apps from Apple) you can make colours transparent and then used them in a gradient. This way it is possible to make beautiful overlays.
[ ] toggle selection of layers with key pressed and mouse-click
[ ] text - spacing of characters; SmallCaps
[ ] command arrow should go to end of line. The whole editing of text is still not working according to standard known keystrokes in many applications. A bit annoying.
[ ] option-command-C (and V) should copy (and paste) format of text or objects
[ ] separate inspector, as in iWeb, or ability to have more tabs open at the same time (I have enough screen-room on my 27inch iMac)
[ ] the function of the widgets for social media is not clear, or could be somewhat expanded: I just want an icon of fe twitter or Facebook visible for people to click on, so they can follow.

Anyway, if you appreciate this, I will keep building my list and send it?
Only thing is that you need to tell me that it is useful, otherwise it is a waste of time.

if you want to see a page that I made in iWeb I can send you a link. Only thing is that I need to know it is not posted public. This site has not been recently updated (time-issue), but it does show what I expect to see possible.
Let me know where I can send the link, if you are interested.

Thanks for your suggestions. Please keep sending them in. We will be introducing a feature request system where other users can vote on your feature requests as well so we can prioritize what users want.

The list has grown. Some I have not thoroughly tested, so it may be different in the end.
Do you have a possible date and featurelist of the next release? It my help me decide which way to go. As it is now, I have not yet decided to buy Everweb, simply because too many features are missing or are not (yet) optimal functional.
I would be very interested.
Please keep me informed of these developments.

Here is the new list

[ ] SmallCaps
[ ] fonts are not displayed in the fontlist after selecting the text
[ ] only backspace works to delete text. not 'delete'
[ ] gradient fill to transparant
[ ] toggle selection of layers with key pressed and mousclick
[ ] text - spacing of characters.
[ ] command arrow should go to end of line. The whole editing of text is still not working according to standard known keystrokes. A bit annoying.
[ ] option-command-C should copy format
[ ] autosave (top priority!)
[ ] separate inspector, as in iWeb, or ability to have more tabs open at the same time (I have enough screen-room on my 27inch iMac)
[ ] folders in tab Assets
[ ] inserting a table (like in pages) with possibilities for calculations
[ ] rulers
[ ] guides (from rulers)
[ ] there is a difference in the linespacing whilst editing text, it changes
[ ] where is 'justified'?
[ ] linespacing shows a comma. why?
[ ] dragging with shift down should lock 1 vector (hor. or vert.)
[ ] grouping objects
[ ] cropping objects
[ ] tabs are possible, but now not controllable
[ ] right-tabs are not allowed right now
[ ] navigation: the menubar has drop-menus. This is only functional when it is used as a top-page menu. Since most screens these dazes are widescreen and pages can easily be 1200 px wide, I prefer a sidebar for my menu's. The drop down does work, but it schould shift down the other menu's and it does not

[ ] It is possible to make more nested menus (directories), but these are not visible. Either shut down the possibility or make more levels of submenu possible.

Grouping objects will be there with 1.1. Justified text is not for web design, it's for print. You'll not be seeing it in any decent web design software.
