Viewing PDF\'s

PDF\'s

User: Peter B. 10 years ago
My pdf's don't seem to be showing up in the preview. They show up in Everweb and I can size and position them, but they are not displaying in the Firefox or the Safari preview.
I'm including screenshots of the Everweb window and the Firefox preview of the same page. Thanks in advance.

I see that if I convert the pdf to a png it will work. Is this the only way to do this? iWeb was able to handle pdf's so I was hoping that Everweb would too.
Is handling pdf's on the to do list for Everweb?
If Everweb cannot handle pdf's, I think the instruction video on importing images should emphasize this. Anyone trying to move from iWeb will expect pdf's to display properly.

A PDF is not an image so it won't be handle as such.

iWeb displayed the first page of a PDF only which is just the same as using an image!

To display a single page of a PDF, it should be uploaded to the server and inserted in the page using an iFrame.

It's a lot better for SEO if you just recreate the newsletter as a webpage so that those whose email client won't display your email flyer will be able to click a link and view it online.

I should have mentioned he fact that EW displays images as the background of a div which has some advantages.

You can display a PDF using an HTML Snippet and the tag like this...

Newsletter

I have created a widget to do this automatically. It also adds styles such as border and frame. I haven't heard from my beta testers yet to see if it works for them or explodes!

I"m at work for about 10-12 each day at the moment, so I don't have much time. But I'll sure comment on them, once I have the time to try them.

There's no rush but you don't get paid until you send in your report!

Roddy,
Thanks for your help.
Not sure what your mean, "recreate the newsletter as a webpage". Convert it to a webpage?

The widget sounds great, converting pdf's to jpg's adds a lot of steps to the process.

Webdesign is work. And making a jpg out of a pdf isn't much of a hassle really. Open it in preview, export as jpg. Reopen it again to reduce size (if needed). If you have hundreds of pdf to convert, well, that's a lot of steps indeed. But hey, there's still automator ;)

I want to be able to include pdf files that can be downloaded from the website. In iWeb I just link to a file to do this. Is this possible using EverWeb?

Create a zip of your PDF and drag it into the Assets List. Then use the Link inspector to "Link to: a File" and choose the file from the list.

Hi Roddy,

Thank you for the swift reply.

The program i usually use to create the pdf documents for the websites is Print Shop. Yes, I realize there may be better ways to do it but I've been using this program since Apple II days and love the ease of it for what I want. I don'r see a way to create a zip of my pdf. In iWeb I simply export documents using the pdf option on Print Shop and save it in a folder on my desktop. All I need to do to add it to a page in iWeb is link to that file from the folder. It's that simple.

What I'm asking is will EverWeb do the same thing? I've been using these things for a long time and have never had to create a zip file and have no idea how or why I need to start now. We're adding steps that shouldn't be necessary.

Thank you for your time and knowledge. I've quickly noticed that you provide a lot of helpful answers on this forum.

It is the exact same way in EverWeb. More detailed instructions can also be found in our knowledgeable article;

How can I link to a PDF file so users can download it?

Note: You do not need to zip the file. If you wanted to zip a file though, all you have to do is right click on it in the Finder and select 'Compress'. This is not necessary though. The process is the exact same as it was in iWeb.

Great! That handles one problem. I'll have to see what other issues come up when I'm working with the program. Thank you.

Using a zip file lets visitors download the PDF directly to their desktop when the link is click rather than having to download it from the browser. This is obviously far more convenient.

For maximum compatibility, use an application like Yemu ZIp to create a zip file that will work a lot better for those visitors who are using Windows computers.

Roddy, again thank you for your help. I'll check into that and ask our club members if it makes things easier for them.
