The confusing way in which EW creates a directory as both a page and a folder is discussed HERE In the transcript of the video training on the subject I see this... Quote: To add a directory, click on the Add Directory button. Select the template you want to use from the templates window. You will now see that you have a new page, but it will not have the normal page icon you are used to. Instead, the icon will look like a folder, or a directory. Remember, this is still a page on your site, so you will need to treat it like any other page. ... which adds to the confusion by saying that a directory may appear to be a folder but it is actually a page. But, then again, it is also a folder and, on just about every other website on the planet, it is a folder and not a page. If the method of creating directories is not going to be changed, the instructions should at least point out the deficiencies of this method and propose a workaround for those who want their websites to be structured in the conventional manner. Users need to be aware of... (a) The fact that about 99% of their visitors will never see this hybrid directory/page (b) They can avoid this whole confusing and embarrassing situation by leaving the "hybrid" page blank and adding a meta refresh to the page head code to direct the 1% of random clickers to the first actual page in the directory like this... <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url= page-name.html" /> ------------------------------- Roddy Website: http://everwebwidgets.com Contact: http://everwebwidgets.com/ewWidgets-home/contact.html NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb! This is something we have discussed here a lot. The way it is setup is the correct way of doing it in our opinion. If you look at iWeb, when you add a page that gets placed into a directory (My Albums, Blog, Podcast), these directories are also pages. That is to say, if you add the My Albums page, you will see My Albums appear in the page list, and when you click on it, you are on an actual page. And you are then free to drag and drop other pages within this directory. For the time being, if users do not want the directory to be a page, they can use that meta refresh. In a future version, we will most likely add this as an option so that adding the meta refresh is built into the software. ------------------------------- Paul EverWeb Developer |

Everybody is entitled to their opinion but I wouldn't justify doing anything by referring to iWeb. I could create a long list of bad practices used in iWeb starting with the default navigation, text to image and so on... I had a look at various websites that employ drop downs and those that do have the directory/page combined set the ul li a:hover and the ul ul li a:hover as the same color. The better designed ones have the ul li block the same width as the drop down to encourage the visitor into realizing that all the links are clickable. When the visitor sees the drop down appear with a different background and width, the majority of them will move down to the sub menu and will never see the directory/page. The problem is that the EW menu isn't capable of achieving either of the above. It is not possible to exactly match the colors as pointed out in this topic and there is no way for the user to adjust the size of the block elements. Elsewhere in this forum it can be seen that most users don't seem to have been aware of this problem and are going to wonder about why people don't visit certain pages if they bother to look at their stats. If EW is to continue to use this method, users should at least be made aware of all this, given some info about avoiding the issue and the color problem should be addressed. On the subject of color, wouldn't it be better to set the color of the ul li block elements using hex color numbers rather than all these images since the drop down is set using these latter anyway? That way, the user would have the option to adjust the blocks to the same width as the drop down. If any user is misguided enough to want to use shapes then that's OK and they can suffer the consequences of a slower loading website. Why punish the majority to indulge the uneducated few who don't realise the detrimental effect on their website performance created by all these server requests? ------------------------------- Roddy Website: http://everwebwidgets.com Contact: http://everwebwidgets.com/ewWidgets-home/contact.html NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb!
