Slideshow Features

The iWeb slideshow tried to be a one size fits all deal and one of the more popular forum questions was about how to modify it.

There are so many slideshow/banner types that its impossible to cater for all of them.

I have tried out literally dozens of slideshows over the years but recently I have dismissed all the ones that can't be made responsive for mobile devices.

Flex Slider is on of my favorites and it can be created in several formats including a simple, fixed timing banner. Here's an example of a basic one...

... and a carousel with navigation arrows...

This is a different brand using the same idea but with some added features...

I have never actually used, or been asked to create, a thumbnail grid style of slideshow like the iWeb default so I attempted one today using nyroModal. There's no step by step instructions with this one and I had to create the code for the thumbnail grid layout and figure out how to get it to work in a responsive fashion. I mention this because there are bound to be some improvements to be made!

To my mind, this is a lot cleaner and more versatile slider than prettyPhoto. See this topic for my case against prettyPhoto...

My personal opinion is that you can't please all the people all the time so why try? It may be better to offer two or more styles.

Beginners tend to get confused about the difference between banners, slideshows, photo grids, carousels and modals and don't usually know quite what they want until they see it in action.

It would be interesting to know what the rest of you guys think. Not so much what your favorite brand of slider is but what features are the most essential.

Galleriffic has a lot of options and variations. This one was customized to remove the info section and other extraneous stuff...

I haven't got around to making it responsive yet.

I mentioned Shadowbox elsewhere in this forum. Up until now I've only used it as a lightbox style image popup from a thumbnail grid.

It just struck me that it must be capable of a slideshow and sure enough it is. IMHO its a lot better and way cleaner looking the prettyphoto. To implement the slideshow its just a question of adding a gallery name to the rel attribute in each image anchor - rel="shadowbox[gallery-name]" and adding displayNav: true to the java script setup.

Although I modified the slider to be responsive, the developer's version is fixed. Demo...

Galleria is another well featured slider. This is one I customized to get the carousel on top of the slide window and used media queries to degrade it gracefully for mobiles...

At the moment I'm only interested in an auto run/loop simple banner that can be sized. There are too many choices to pick from. You pick a couple.

I've played around for about 2 hours and can't get a simple WOW slider up on Easyweb. Yes I've done the research and watched the youtube videos but still haven't figured it out.

I need simple. Real simple.

This banner is adapted from the Really Simple Slider which was chosen for the ease in which you can add captions and hyperlinks.

I have tried to make it even simpler by making the size, border, timing and transition accessible.

Unlike Wow, there is no need for a license or to suffer the branding.

I can't think of anything that's simpler than this - unless you get someone else to do it for you!

Projects like this will be a lot easier to create when we are able to add the scripts to the assets the External Files folder in EasyWeb. I suppose some instructions would help too if you've never done it before!

Using Wow in EasyWeb is kind of counterproductive unless you are going to host the assets on another server. This is what I did in this example...

http://roddymckay.com/EasyWeb/wow-slider.html

... since we can't upload them to the EasyWeb server at this time.

You would also need to learn how to add the images to EW, obtain their file path and then add these to the Wow app. Even although Wow does all the heavy lifting, you still need to understand the various assets, what their role is and where to insert them in the HTML doc.
