Viewing Password Protection

Password Protection

User: Roddy 12 years ago
So far, there has been no mention of password protection for sites, individual pages or directories.

In another topic, the question has been raised about a password protected client area for uploading movies. I would imagine that some users would require this feature for other types of files that they would only wanted to be viewed by certain people due to the nature of the content and/or copyright concerns.

Since it's not possible to access the EasyWeb server to protect folders ourselves, is there a solution in the wind?

That would be a really neat feature indeed.

We're working on password protection and can set this up manually for anyone that needs it.

Does that mean you will know my password and have access to all my secret stuff?

Roddy has a point...

If your stuff is so secret, password protection would not protect anyone who really wants to see it from getting access to it.

Internet security is a HUGE industry itself. Don't rely on simple password protection on a shared web server from protecting it from anyone that really wants it anyways.

And wether or not you provide the password to me any server admin could access your data. (This goes for our servers or any other companies). That isn't to say that we or anyone does, just that it is possible.

I really hope you all have a realistic view on your privacy while doing anything online! In most cases, you don't have any. And it's mostly due to your own risky behavior you may not be aware of, not the insecurity of the server.

Well, I was joking of course in respect of my own files but a lot of people don't seem to realise that anything published to the internet is not private any more.

It's still the case that, to keep a secret, never write it down, nor put it on a computer or tell anyone. I suppose you could add that you should try to avoid allowing anyone to administer you with drugs such as sodium thiopental!

I know, it's been said so many times it may make you want to throw up but,,,, it's a true statement. locks have always been used solely to keep honest people honest.

That being said, password protection will stop 100% of honest people that try to access a password protected area. Using the argument that the internet isn't secure so password protection is (kind of) irrelevant is like saying there's no sense in going to a physician for a check up because we're all going to die anyway.

Hi Dan,

We will put it in password protected pages.

To be honest, at the moment it's not an issue for me but there have been times in the past when I wanted a password protected page. I think the feature would be used a lot more than you would wildly guess.

iWeb sites published to MobileMe could be password protected as a whole but there was a huge number of people asking how they could protect individual pages. I'm sure EW will get the same request!

Password protection open up a wide range of possible customers. Organisations, like Choirs, football teams etc all wants a site but also a site with a protected option/menu for the board etc.

Nice to hear that this will be implemented :)

Can I please test this option?
