Widget menu personalization and a widget/plugin/template store

User: Boris K. 10 years ago
I would like to see a modern widget / plugin / template store for EverWeb.
So that people who make widgets can add it and sell it. I believe that EverWeb wil grow faster this way.
There is a lack of possibilities now and a lot of them aren't actually that great.
Competition between programmers will be a good thing I believe.
Also I would like to have the option to control my widget menu where i can delete widgets i don't use and where i can personalize the widget menu for personal use.

Hi Boris,

Thanks for the feedback!

Both features are definitely something we are looking into adding to EverWeb but we don't have a timeline yet for a release of these features.

Sorry I cannot provide more details at this time.

Boris I completely agree with you on this one, widgets are currently very limited the development team should open the door here to other 3rd party programmers to complement this tool even further. If nothing else it will make this one of the most popular platforms for web development on the Mac.

Widgets are opened to anyone. We have a couple third parties creating Widgets and EverWeb themes.

Most people worked with us to create it or just based their widgets on existing ones. We also have a document explaining how to make them.

Did you want to create some widgets?

Do you mean that the number of available widgets is limited or that they are limited in the scope of items that can be created with them?

At the last count, there were around 500 widgets available to EverWeb users which is probably more than any other similar application has.

The EverWeb widget API is comprehensive and allows a lot of items to be created that users would otherwise not be able to create due to lack of knowledge or time. Users need to realise what can and can't be done with a widget. For example, I see quite few requests for parallax style websites. These are not possible with a widget at this time and other website creation tools use templates for this - not plugins.

If you want to see how much stuff can get packed into a widget, take a look at the Flex widgets for creating responsive websites. With some of these widgets, the functionality is limited by the physical size of the EverWeb Widget Settings panel. This has a fixed height which imposes restrictions on the number of controls that can be incorporated.

The Flex widgets are pushing the envelope in the sense that there just isn't really enough room in EverWeb to make them more comprehensive and also in the skill level required by users to implement them. There's not a lot of point in trying to create a responsive website until all the functions of EverWeb have been mastered and the user has an understanding of what a responsive website is and how it is layed out.

Another request I see is for a more advanced ecommerce widget which can calculate shipping and quantity discounts etc. This is unrealistic and those who require features like this need to understand how much scripting is required for this to happen. I don't see how a widget could possibly create the kind of features offered by the Ecommerce sites although I would love it someone could prove me wrong.

Have you checked out Serif Webplus?

This unfortunately is a Windows application but offers full blog, full e-commerce including cart management and parallax scrolling.
All WYSIWYG design all drag and drop.

Not that I'm trying to dog ever web, for me this app is great, just wanted to show this anything is possible.
