Cannot insert a LinkedIn button and when I do it manually all sorts of unintended things happen - bug or user error?

Trying to use the "insert > button > linkedin profile" from the drop down, I enter my full url for my profile, and I get the error message, "couldn't add picture to assets."

In the meantime I tried a hack by using a LI icon off a web search, and enabling it as a link to my profile. That worked provisionally - what that means is that I then want it to stay in a "fixed position" "always on top".

I position the button in the header on the right. When I click "fixed position" the button jumps *way* over to the right in the editor window, pretty much off screen. This is the second time I tried this; the first time when I clicked "fixed position" the button would plain old disappear. Oddly, when I preview it, it shows the button in the *original* position and the link works.

Screenshots attached.

[EDIT: I just quit and re-opened my project and the LI button has entirely disappeared from the editor window. Yet, if I "preview" the site, the button is there in the original position. So (1) I can't delete the LI button now; and (2) I can't re-position it.]

I'm on the trial period for EW and there's a lot more kinks I see in the app that need to be ironed out (simple things like command-M doesn't minimize the window), but frankly it's the closest to iWeb where I *don't* have to use a template, I can start with a blank page.

Thanks

I just tried the LinkedIn button and it does work if you enter the correct URL. However, there doesn't seem to be a way to edit it if you screw up except to delete and redo.

When you select "Fixed Postion" for an object - it does just that. If you then check "Relative to the browser left", the object will be fixed at the amount you have enter for the value of X in the Metrics inspector - which is probably not what you want.

The button will have disappeared off the EverWeb design canvas because you don't have it set wide enough and you have set the button absolutely - rather than relatively. Use the Window menu to Zoom and, if you still can't see the button, select Presentation Mode (command + period) and you should be able to see and delete it.

Thanks Roddy, good information.

This worked: using "presentation" mode which shows basically what the site will look like in a browser, but editable. It's not documented and something I ordinarily wouldn't click on, but I see using it a lot in the future. I was able to see the LI hack-button off to the right and edit/delete it. I actually like presentation mode for true WYSIWYG editing, once all the elements are on the page they can be seen better and arranged, inasmuch as the regular editing window IMO is kind of small on my screen and as I mentioned, doesn't seem to scroll L/R properly.

As an aside, I attached two screenshots to my original post but they don't appear in this forum. I went back to the screenshots and saw that when I clicked "fixed position" for the LI button the "X" position of the object was 760 for some reason, which was way over to the right. As I mentioned, the editing window doesn't scroll that far right properly for some reason.

This didn't work all that well: zoom. It only Zooms in like 10%. Kind of useless. Also in a true Mac world zoom and presentation would be under a "view" menu, so that's a little awkward too; and there aren't the usual keyboard shortcuts for zoom in/out or minimize window. Awkward, a true zoom would be useful for getting close-in visual alignment of objects (but I've already purchased EW and set up a really great website, it's the only program out there that's closest to a true iWeb and where I can start with a blank page)

This didn't work at all: Using ""insert > button > linkedin profile"". I double and triple checked the URL, and tried it with different themes to see if had something to do with the "blank" theme missing the button. The error message seems to have something to do with downloading an image rather than a URL error. I'm using 1.9 if that matters.

My hack worked, I'm not happy the program doesn't work like it should, but the problem got solved.

Thanks for your good information.

Here's my "final" website (in quotes because I'm always changing it and have some things I want to add later like a linkedin feed):

Zoom is usually only used if you get a stuck window.

Perhaps you are trying to do something beyond the capabilities of the widget? I'll leave the developer's to comment on that one.

There seems to be quite a few variations of LI buttons. If you want to create any of these you need to make sure you insert the various parts of the code in the correct places in EverWeb.

Quite often these social media plugins will not be visible until you publish to the server for various reasons. If you need help with a plugin, post the code in this forum.

Thanks Roddy, and thanks for the link to the "tips" page.

I just created my own LI button by finding a LI logo image on the web, inserting it on my page, making it a link and linking it to my page. Took like a minute, it's a classic iWeb hack.

(for any developer reading this: ) The LI thing is a drop down item from the "insert" menu at the top, not a plugin. It gives the error message "couldn't add picture to assets" so it seems it's not finding a picture somewhere. I don't get to the point where Roddy suggests it's a publishing situation.
