I could be mistaken but, I am guessing the "Instant Alpha" that preview offers kinda like a magic wand tool that turns the background transparent

Yes, exactly! In IWeb, under Format there is an Instant Alpha tool that turns the background of the photo transparent...

Instant alpha is a very complex feature to implement. Unless we get a lot of requests for it we won't be putting it in so quickly.

Actually, I am not sure how to do it with Preview....Could you please clarify?

Here is a quick video:

Use the magic wand to select the background then press the delete key on the keyboard which will convert the image to a PNG for transparency.

Sometimes I forget about the little Apple gems. It's not PhotoShop but, it is a handy way to do a quick mask
