What is Masking and what can I do with it?

User: Larry D. 10 years ago
I saw a question about masking and the masking button, so I looked at EverWeb and found the Masking Button. But, I can not find any explanation as to what it is or does and nothing in any tutorial I looked up. I even Gooogled EverWeb and Masking and all I got were discussions on the forum about certain features that meant nothing to me.

Please guide me to a tutorial that explains its function.

Thank you, Oliver

The most basic explanation is that you are covering a portion of the image so that part cannot be seen.
I cannot find a good basic tutorial. Here is one of Roddys mask widgets that should show you the basics of it. To be honest, the easiest way to get to know it is to simply drag an image onto a page and while it is still selected, click Mask. It will look like a frame covering the sides of the image. Grab one of the small squares on the inside of the mask and move it around. You may need to click in shown area of image to get the adjustment squares.
I do not know the extent of EW mask ability. When you get into advanced image programs (photoshop, etc), masks can be used to remove backgrounds, change colors, sharpen images.
I am most familiar with masks from painting. In painting a mask is used to prevent paint from being on certain areas, most commonly seen in small bright whites that use the canvas/paper as the white, instead of painting white.
This is 1 image with 2 different parts masked.

Masking is not really part of web design and is more appropriate in DTP and photo manipulation apps. It would normally be used for creating image effects - not just a lazy and inefficient method of cropping.

Masking is probably incorporated in EverWeb since it was available in iWeb and we know that iWeb was not a "real" web design software as it was developed from Apple's iWork apps.

The illustration in the previous post shows how not to use masking in that it covers an unwanted area of the image but doesn't reduce the image file size. It is actually increasing it and therefore makes for a very inefficient way of cropping!

I completely agree with Roddy. I never use a mask, I crop the image outside of EW and put it in Assets. But some find it easier and faster than cropping

EverWeb doesn't increase the file size when an image is cropped. There is nothing wrong with using the Masking feature in EverWeb...

If I insert a JPEG at 400 x 300 px and a file size of 34Kb and mask it to about 200px square, the file is converted to PNG with a file size of 58Kb.

If I crop the image to 200px before importing into EverWeb, the file size is 10Kb.

That's a bug with JPEG files. It is fixed for version 1.9. It was only increasing the file size for JPEGs, not PNGs.

The masking tool is a very efficient and powerful tool in EverWeb. If you come across more issues with it, please let me know.
