Another reminder on using BETA software

It looks like it's time for a another (less gentle) reminder to people who may not have experience with "beta" software.

This is software that has **not been fully tested**. It's offered to people if they would like to help test it to find bugs that were missed in in-house testing. Beta, by definition, is software that is not ready for general release.

Using beta software for your on-line website is a gamble - and not a smart one. I do it but take lots of precautions and know how to work around most problems. There can - and most likely will - be problems. Some minor, some major. Anything, including losing your entire site, is possible in a worse case situation. Coding is complex and difficult and that's why you "beta test" before rolling out a general release version of any program.

If you are not willing to chase down and report bugs and know how to recover from problems, always leave the beta testing to others and wait for the official release of any software.

We all love to jump on new versions of any program, especially if it provides something we've been waiting for. A new beta version might provide that but it also comes with risks.

Rage does a great job of testing in-house before putting a beta out for others to test. No test will find all bugs so the more people that pound on a beta version the better it will be. It's best to leave that to those who understand the risks and have the time and temperament to fix what blows up.

We are very lucky that the developer (Paul) spends as much time in these forums as he does. He's more patient than I would be when he's getting hammered for YOUR expectations that this is a finished product.

If you started every forum message with, "I decided to use the latest beta to run my main website when I shouldn't and here's what happened...", I bet thing's would be a bit more civil.

What surprises me is that some users are using the beta version of the software on commercial and client sites and publishing the results to the server without testing them locally. That's irresponsible.

As for those who are using it with OS X 10.10.4 beta - that's just insanity!

so what is the latest non beta software download?
User: James G. 10 years ago
Currently it is 1.8.0 Build 1404

But there are maybe 2? if using mac 10.7 or later, update from inside EW; if on 10.6 or lower, get from Announcement forum. I think that is what it says there
