Showing thumbnail images of assets

I have a long lists of assets and most of them come directly from my photo app. So most of them are called like P1023425.jpg. To reuse an image, it is impossible to find it back in this long list. I can't just go through the whole list, click on the preview eye, to find it back. It would wonderful if, instead of or next to the names, you could have a list of thumbnails.

For a faster workflow, I'm now just finding the image back in my photo app and drag it in again. This will then add a duplicate to the list, which also doesn't make sense. It would make more sense if Everweb just recognise that this file already exists and not import it, but selects it in the assets list.

The only way I have found now to discover the item in the asset list, is to click the image itself on the page, which will select the image in the asset list, then go to the destination page and drag it in. This is not the fastest way when you are working on a page.

May I ask why you have chosen to not name your images with a description?
An image with a descriptive name will give more visitors to your website, since those will show up as well when someone searches using those words.
Even something simple like white-tulip-large.jpg

Website images need to be prepared properly before in respect of size, file name and file type. See page for more info.

If the images are being added to a slider, they should have sequential numbers/letters so that they are easily identified and will automatically group themselves in the Assets List.

If an image is inserted in an HTML5 element with figcaption and alt text, a descriptive file name is not essential. If inserted on its own - with none of these attributes - a descriptive file name is essential.

I don't really care for titles to images or preparation when not needed. I just drag them from Aperture directly into EverWeb. EverWeb will convert them to web size and from checking the file size, it actually does a good job. I don't need the images to be searchable on the web. Images are a visual thing, not text based. If you need to find an image fast in a list of over 100 images, visually it will take you a few seconds. If you have to find the title in that long list, it is going to be much harder. Even if you named them all. I mean, do you remember all the names of your files?

If it is possible to integrate thumbnail images, it would be in line with the philosophy of EverWeb. EverWeb is after all originally directly to old iWeb users and originally user friendly. The average iWeb user just drops images from their iPhoto library in iWeb and does the editing (cropping, magic wand) in iWeb. Most will not rename their files or change the weight of their image, but relies on iWeb to do that. I don't see why EverWeb wouldn't take on this user friendly features. I'm a bit more than a home user, but I like it easy when it can be easy.

Speaking about Magic Wand... Badly wanted as well!

This is something we can add, but with many assets it can get crowded in there.

It should automatically detect the image if it was already added to your assets list. Did you rename the image file in the assets list? If so, EverWeb won't know that the image file already exists.

I do recommend you rename your pages for better organization. If you know you recently added an image, in version 1.8 you can easily use the 'Sort by Date Added' option to see a list of images you recently added.

iWeb never really optimized your images for the web. We are working on making things easier and cropping can be done properly within EverWeb. In version 1.8 we automatically offer web optimizations for you as well.

Thanks for the answers, Paul. iPhoto is also a long list with photos, so I wouldn't call many pictures crowded. It is just a list with photos. You could make it an option to turn on or off, if it is not something everyone will appreciate.

Re the duplicates when importing: I had some xxx-1 named assets, but maybe they are still duplicates from earlier Everweb versions. I just tested it and indeed will Everweb 1.8 not add a duplicate.

I do appreciate the resizing of the files in 1.8. It's not many apps that do this so well. I'm not trying to nitpick, but it looks like it doesn't happen when you paste an image, though. The images I copy-pasted from iWeb are still large. But I do not find this a problem, but it might be something I like to point out.
