Mobile Friendly

Is your mobile website mobile friendly? Does Google think it Is?

Go to the Mobile-Friendly Google page, click the green button and then enter the website URL...

Remember that Google punishes slow loading sites. Here are some guidelines...

Text must be readable without zooming.
Content must fit the screen and not cause the visitor to scroll horizontally.
Replace text links with CTA's created using HTML/CSS
All text hyperlink - including those in the navigation - need to be spaced out and have sufficient extra top/bottom padding to create a target at least 30px in height.
Avoid Google hosted fonts.
Do not use hovers/rollovers.
Do not use images for graphic elements.
Reduce media file sizes for the smart phone version of the site
Don't use autoplay for audio, video and slideshows.
Never have more than one slider or video per page.
Optimize all images ruthlessly.
Keep slider images to a minimum - 12 is enough.
Sliders must work using swipe or tap.
And...

Yay, I passed. One question though, regarding your list. Hosting Google fonts vs using the link provided by Google. I've looked into this and it seems most people suggest the latter, which is what I've currently done. The rationale is that Google's servers will always be faster than your own (in my case, GoDaddy).

Every time you add a link to another server you are creating a server request which lowers the download efficiency of the page files.

Google provides an indicator which shows the impact of using their hosted fonts on load time.

I think a lot of people don't test their sites properly under "real" conditions. Sitting at home using a fast broadband connection is a bit different from downloading the same page in the field over a less than perfect mobile network.

One of the big advantages of creating a separate smart phone version of the site is being able to focus on fast and efficient rather than unnecessary extras. It doesn't seem sensible to me to use the same graphic elements and features on the smart phone site without considering their impact on load time. For example, it's just a matter of common sense to use a smaller size movie file for the mobile version but how many users are actually doing this?
