I have been wanting to launch my main website for awhile now; but I am having problems with a test site I am using. www.mvgoogle.com is the test site. My home button will not work. I have replaced the button, changed page name, relative path, absolute path, created new pages, etc. I have done all that I can think of to get it working. I am using the 'Buttons' widget from Roddy. The 'home 1' button has worked since first installed. What is going on? I want to publish my main site but do not want to pull my hair out trying to get it to work |

You have a page named "mvgoogle-home-1" but do you have a page named "mvgoogle-home" published to the server?

My 'home' page was named 'home'. The page you landed on was named 'home'. It is just a page, not a directory. What I just found out was if I name the 'home' page 'index' and change the file path to 'index' it works. Now, why was my page named 'home' renamed 'index' in the system? |

| I should say my page was named 'mvgoogle-home' , not just 'home' | |

The default page needs to be index.html for a browser to display it properly when no file name is specified. You can leave the file name out of the url and it will also work.

| So, is naming my homepage 'index' what we have to do now? | |

When a visitor enters mvgoogle.com, the browser looks for an index.html in the site's root folder. It is normal practice to name the first, or home page, of a site "index.html" so that visitors will reach it using just the domain name. For this reason, EverWeb changes the file name of the first page at the to of list in the left column to index.html no matter what we name it. This means that when you are creating an internal link to the "home" page - or creating your own navigation - the file path needs to be to index.html rather than home-page.html. This is design to help the large number of users who don't know how to structure a website. If users were told that they had to use "index' for the home page file name they would probably be even more confused. Ex iWeb users will know that the method used there was different in that the home page at the top of the left column was named whatever and the application created a blank index.html file which redirected to the "home" page. This method can be used to our own advantage when we don't want the index.html page that EverWeb creates inside a directory to be a real page as described HERE. I have used that technique to avoid wasting space in the navigation of the HTML5 section of the Widgetbox site by placing the home page inside a directory and placing an index.html file in the root folder which redirects to it. ------------------------------- Roddy Website: http://everwebwidgets.com Contact: http://everwebwidgets.com/ewWidgets-home/contact.html NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb! | I do not see the change in confusion over naming a page index or having to point a link to a page without that name. I never had to do this before, but now I am forced to. It would be nice if we were told about changes this big. I really dislike fundamental changes that are not explained. | |

Quote: It would be nice if we were told about changes this big. There weren't any changes to this behavior. It works the same all the way back to version 1 You don't need to name your home page index. You don't need to change anything. When linking to your main page do not specify a file name, just use your URL and your web browser will take you to your default page. ------------------------------- Paul EverWeb Developer |
