Themes For EverWeb

Hello everybody!

We had this discussion a little while back but I wanted to re-open it as a new thread. We're currently re-assessing the templates/themes in EverWeb and making a few changes to how users access the templates. This new change will make it easier for us to deliver new templates to you, and also make it easier for you to find and use the new templates.

Currently, most of our templates have themes to them that are specific to industries. Our thought process was that we could make themes industry specific and that would allow users to easily select a theme based on their industry, and then those who wanted to make a custom theme could still be able to use these templates more for the color schemes as opposed to the actual theme of the template (the theme is mostly based on the stock images that you probably are going to delete anyways).

Since a lot of EverWeb users have come from iWeb, most of you already had a theme designed, and just wanted to re-create that same theme in EverWeb. This is totally fine, but it has resulted in a lot of users not using the built-in themes. We have no problem with this either, but it does leave us with questions about how to proceed in the future.

We will soon be releasing a few more themes that are more general as opposed to industry specific, but we are certainly interested in everyone's opinion on the types of themes that we should be adding over the next little while. We believe that the quantity, and quality of themes in EverWeb can greatly help with the continued growth and popularity of the application.

We greatly appreciate the value you all bring to the EverWeb community, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

I almost never use themes but I think it would be better to have more general: colors, elegant,funky,etc....rather than industry specific...

Would love a few more themes to use/customise/inspire. I'm looking for themes suitable for schools as I currently maintain two sites, one for school children aged 5-11 and the other aged 12-18. Similar requirements but completely different designs needed.

Obviously, the blogging feature would be helpful for the 'News' section but I've got around this by setting up a Google + page for both schools and including a 'latest news' ticker on the home page. Works well, so far...

Jeremy -

I generally use the Photographer theme - mostly because it starts off fairly blank and there's less to delete. Industry themes are ok but ignore people who are making a website for personal use. I'd like to see themes that are generic but have various color combinations and styles than can be modified to fill the users preference.
A blank canvas is always the best.

And me, I am still trying to copy/create a vintage theme but it is definitively ugly ;-)

My question is, "Do most users really need a painting by numbers style of template anyway?". These templates encourage beginners to think that they can plaster their web pages with shape images.

A good example of why this shouldn't be done is illustrated in this topic where the OP has around 70 shape images per page and wonders why his website is taking so long to upload and has such poor performance in the browser. For each shape image, EW creates a retina version too so, on a 100 page site he is uploading 14,000 images in addition to the stuff that the visitors actually see.

A template that should be given priority is one to create the 100% width header that so many users seem to want. They can achieve this using code entry as shown in this demo…

It would a lot easier, and have wider appeal to those who can't/won't use code, to create a template along these lines…

NOTE: I have include a full size, responsive background image just to show that it can be done in conjunction with the full width header effect. In general, these should be avoided like the plague due to their effect on the website's performance in the browser. A full size background image, along with a whole bunch of shape images, is a recipe for disaster!
