tons of "assets" uploaded that I don't want.

User: Susan S. 11 years ago
Wow what a mess, a bazillion files uploaded for a tiny but image heavy website. I put all the images I wanted to use on my desktop and then change the names of them to things I thought would be good for SEO. When I added them to the site they appear in my "asset" list with the names I gave them.

However as I upload this site (it's been uploading for ages) it seems to be uploading not only those pictures that I renamed but also some of the previous names (out of the camera names like img_2103.jpg) that are not showing in my asset list on everweb. I also deleted the pix that came with the template I picked (white) because of course, they are not mine... they came with the everweb template. But although they are not listed in my assets list they are on the server.

It also took over 3 minutes for the image slider to load and start... Ok I have about 10 photo's in it that are like 1000x500 but still, thats a long time.

I like the way the site looks but I don't understand why all those "assets" loaded that I don't want. Also could they be slowing down the loading of the image slider, the load time on that is totally unacceptable.

Any help would be great. I always do this sort of stuff on a weekend when apparently everyone is out having fun!

Susan

PS just looked at the site and it's missing TONS of pix and more than half the images on the site only load halfway down, whats with that. It looks perfect in everweb, perfect in the Safari and firefox previews and so does NOT work on Chrome the browser I use. Is that typical of Everweb?????? Every single page takes upward of 5 minutes to load and for the most part this site is a copy of an iweb site that loads in seconds. As of right now the top tap of the chrome browser has that spinning thing indicating it's loading and i'm on 11 minutes 30 seconds and no pix. Clearly I did something wrong.

Hi Susan,

If you published your site with the previous images in use they are still in your website folder and online. You'll have to download version 1.5 and use the Publish Entire site from the File menu to get rid of those files. You'll also have to delete them from your FTP folder as EverWeb will only delete them in your local folder, not your FTP server. Your web hosting provider can help you with that.

https://billing.ragesw.com/forum.php?act=thread&tid=2435

If you have very large images in the image slider your browser has to download them before they can be displayed. The delay can be a combination of the size of your images, the speed of your internet connection and the speed of your web hosting providers servers.

Well that would make sense but I didn't ever publish the site to a server prior to this. I published to a folder on my desktop thinking I could get it on my ipad and show it to them that way. You told me in another thread I couldn't do that so I made a new folder on my server (because the old dated site is still operational) and published to that folder. So it was the first time it was ever published to a server.

I've just gone into godaddy and deleted everything from that new folder and I'm re-uploading the site to Godaddy. It is a LONG upload, really long. I used a lot of those picture frames with the graphics (i like them) and none of them fully loaded, they were on the top half of the images but very few loaded all the way to the bottom of the images.

And again I'm watching it upload image files that I deleted (a few photoshop files .psd that I used accidentally) I deleted them and changed to a jpeg but again they are not in my asset list, but were used in the very first draft of this site. I don't get where they are and why they are uploading, thats confusing me.

Lastly if I download the beta program is that going to just write over my current program and the website will be in there? Cuz I don't want to have to do the site again, its taken forever. The site have been uploading for 9 minutes and it's only about halfway thru! And tons of images that I don't use are uploading. I'm clearly not very computer savvy but I don't get where they are coming from and how I delete them from the site.

Now that's its loaded you can see it at: http://www.capecodairfield.com/newsite/

Previewing your site will also export assets that you may have used in the past and no longer use.

It is likely you looked at your website before it was fully published so you some files were missing. Your website looks OK to me.

it won't overwrite anything. We wouldn't release updates that deleted websites from previous versions of EverWeb.

Use the Publish Entire Site from the new beta to get rid of those old files.

Susan -

The site looks nice and loads quickly.
With that out of the way - never upload LARGE pictures. There's no point to it. They take forever to upload, they take forever to download to someone's browser and the browser will then resize them.
I usually do 300x300 for general use. If you really think it's a winner and people will want to bask in all its glory, then 500x500. The monitor resolution is only 72-96 DPI so anything over that is lost.
Seriously, resize your stuff.

Updating a full site via FTB can take a while. 40 - 90 minutes is not unusual if you have a lot of pictures. After that it's fast as only the changed stuff is uploaded. Your ISPs upload speed also has a lot to do with it. Remember it's a bunch slower than your download speed.

loads really quick in oxfordshire...

I tend to publish to a folder on my computer & then 'get info' to get the size of the whole folder or have a look for any big files that may need adjusting. nice site. Andy

Thanks for the comments and information. Again, I'm not hugely computer/web savvy so I hope you'll bear with me. (or is it bare?) ;)

Courtney told me not to use large pix, I'm going to reduce them all to the size that I've scaled them to on the website and remove the metadata that Aperture sends with them because it's not needed. However, she also said to make all the pix 300x300 but the image slider box is larger than that so don't those pix have to at least be that size?

And to Paul... Ok I'll download the beta and try it that way however, since it doesn't overwrite my purchased version of Everweb, how will I get my website from the purchased version to the Beta version? Or will they just be in there?

Thanks much for the comments everyone, I'd also take any comments on the design of the site, I have a thick skin. :)

Hi Susan.
I cropped the images to the actual size of slideshow, in my case 1000px by 563px. I think this was Roddy's advice (I used his widget) and that seemed to speed it up & make it work smoothly. The info on this page may be useful...

I'm going to do that too Andrew thank you. I'll start working on the photo's tomorrow. I like the little dots under the pix on your site, good way to let peeps know there are more pix coming.

I love not only your site but all the wonderful stuff on it. If I was close by I'd be there in a heartbeat and buy tons of stuff, really beautiful! Sadly I'm on Cape Cod, MA.
