Paypal purchase and downloadable music?

I've created a music CD. I want to give the purchaser the choice of a hardcopy version (that will be shipped) or a 'downloadable' version. How would I set up a downloadable version in EverWeb? Such that the visitor clicks to purchase, pays, and then gets a link to download the music MP3 just purchased. It would also be interesting to know (if anyone at EverWeb knows) what the best audio format for downloadable music might be ... MP3 (I can create any quality of MP3, or some other format I'm not aware of. I notice Apple and iTunes have their own proprietary format. All ears, Ben |

I use E-Junkie for digital distribution of audio, PDFs, widgets etc. See the bottom of this page. PayPal handles the payment and E-Junkie does the download. MP4 has almost the same quality as WAV/AIFF with a file size not much bigger than MP3. I used to offer an MP3 with an option to download the MP4 for those who have professional or audiophile equipment for playback. If in doubt - stick with MP3 at a reasonable quality - 128kbps. Roddy Aha! Just visited your suggested page. Quite fascinating. I'm reading through what I can find on the site. And, which is the actual Widget that will do the music download thing? I'm relatively new to Widgets and they are still a bit of a mystery. I'm probably a bit slow - can't seem to figure out which pack I need to get. Ben PS ... I don't know why my post is doubling and tripling up. I'm not resending it. Thank you kindly Roddy, I will check out E-junkie. I was hoping that it was just another little EverWeb widget I could drop into the site. I wonder if the MP4 you are talking about is the very same MP4 I use regularly in video? If it is, I never thought to use it as an audio medium. And it plays in as many players as an mp3? Very much appreciated, I'm off to check out E-junkie... All the best, Ben Last edit 12 years ago |

An MP4 audio file is really just an M4A file in the MPEG wrapper. SInce it is the audio component of an MP4 video it will play on any device that supports MP4 video. There's probably still quite a few old MP3 players around that don't support it. The difference between MP3 and MP4 audio is fairly obvious to me when listening on my studio equipment but hardly noticeable on computer or average consumer playback device. The MP4 has extended bass and treble range. Audio quality took a huge step backward with the introduction of MP3 downloads. It is far inferior to the so called CD quality of a WAV or AIFF file recorded at 44.1KHz but I doubt if the average consumer knows or cares. ------------------------------- Roddy Website: http://everwebwidgets.com Contact: http://everwebwidgets.com/ewWidgets-home/contact.html NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb! | Sounds familiar. Thank you for that. I'm thinking of doing several different versions for download. The trick is ... the file is a single 72 minute piece. It's designed to put people to sleep. I've given away hundreds of copies over the years. It seems to work for almost everyone, at least that's what they report back. Maybe they're just being kind. As I'm still getting reports that people are using it ten years later ... I thought maybe I could make it available for others. Thanks for your help Roddy. I'm still trying to get my head around the download widget thing. I'm sure I will. Much appreciated. Ben

If you want to give it away free, create a zip of the audio file(s), drag it into the Assets list and create a link to the file using the Hyperlink inspector.

This is most helpful. I haven't used the Assets list yet. And I often have PDF's on various of my sites for clients to download. I can't remember how I was doing it, but this sounds mucho easier. Does zipping make for easier downloading? My zip files never seem much smaller than the original. And is there not some issue about PC/Mac on opening the 'zipped' file? Maybe that's the old days. Thank you Roddy. |

You need to zip the files so that they will download to the visitor's desktop when the link is clicked. Using the Finder File menu to compress a file will incur the wrath and derision of Microsoft Windows users. YemuZip creates a PC compatible zip. ------------------------------- Roddy Website: http://everwebwidgets.com Contact: http://everwebwidgets.com/ewWidgets-home/contact.html NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb! | Yes! Exactly. Thanks for that. I just remembered I've heard about YemuZip. And that was the thing that was bothering me at the back of my mind - PC compatibility. Perfect. Mucho appreciated.
