HTML5 Video - issues with using MP4 and WebM

This is probably a question for Roddy or Paul. I have a site showcasing videos using the Sublime Video player. Videos that are H.264 using MP4 play perfectly in Safari and Chrome but used to stutter (as if dropping frames) in Firefox. I think they're better now with the latest version 29, mind you I'm only able to test on my Mac using OS X 10.8.5. Just to be safe, I added some WebM files and amended the code accordingly. Firefox now defaults to my WebM video UNTIL I click HD. It then switches to the MP4 HD version, not the WebM HD version. It's actually better quality so I don't mind people viewing the MP4 over the WebM, but why is that? Is it because vs 29 of FF plays MP4s with no problem now? This makes me wonder if it's even worth adding WebM files? What are your thoughts? You can test for yourself going to this link and playing the video. If using FF, you should see it start with the WebM file and switch to an MP4 if you choose HD. It flashes the poster frame first, which it doesn't do in Safari or Chrome where the transition is seamless. Quote from the Mozilla site... "The MP4 container format with the H.264 video codec and the AAC audio codec is natively supported by desktop/mobile Internet Explorer, Safari and Chrome, but Chromium and Opera do not support the format. IE and Chrome also support the MP3 audio codec in the MP4 container, but Safari does not. Firefox/Firefox for Android/Firefox OS supports the format in some cases, but only when a third-party decoder is available, and the device hardware can handle the profile used to encode the MP4." You need to supply a WebM for Firefox and Opera and OGV for old versions of these browsers. This is why I still use MP4 with flash fallback since it only requires one video file and also works in geriatric versions of IE if you care about that sort of thing. ------------------------------- Roddy Website: http://everwebwidgets.com Contact: http://everwebwidgets.com/ewWidgets-home/contact.html NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb! According to JW, all browsers support MP4! See section 2 on this page... http://www.jwplayer.com/html5/ ------------------------------- Roddy Website: http://everwebwidgets.com Contact: http://everwebwidgets.com/ewWidgets-home/contact.html NOTE: I am an EverWeb user and NOT affiliated with EverWeb! Thanks Roddy. I read that page on Firefox as well but the JW one seems to be more up to date. It looks like MP4 is finally here to stay and compatible across all boards (at least if people update to the latest versions!). I guess that's why my HD switching goes to MP4 instead of WebM. Trying to get the same video quality while matching bitrate and file size with WebM is pretty tricky and ultimately a losing battle. MP4 is way better and offers more control (gamma correction, etc.) so I'd much prefer sticking with that anyway. Cheers mate!
