Using code in EverWeb

User: Jonkeba 12 years ago
Unfamiliar with inserting code, I'd like to see a video that shows a number of graphic (close-up) examples of inserting code in EW in different situations. (I'm starting to run into a few of the basics in Freeman's in Head First HTML & CSS and could use a bit more info on using it in EW.)

The current video/transcript seems a little brief—more about than actual hands-on doing.

Haven't yet figured out how to quickly get to the videos. When I open up EasyWeb Video Training, expecting to find a video, I find the transcripts—then go to Utube to see the video. I suspect there's a much quicker, easier way...

Thanks.

It's better if you ask for something specific and we can help you. There are an endless possibility of code that could be entered in an HTML Snippet.

Roddy has many examples on his website already.

You don't see the youtube video on that page when you click the Video Tutorials button?

An instructional video on code insertion would probably last for several hours!

One thing you definitely should NOT do is copy over code from iWeb Snippets - even although the EW instructions say you can!

You really need to have a reasonable knowledge of HTML and CSS and a basic understanding of what javascript is and how it functions. You also need to know how an HTML doc is constructed and where to put the various pieces of code in relation to each other. There are no hard and fast rules.

I have tested dozens of codes in EverWeb with varying results. Although I am perfectly capable of writing code, I never do it in EW. I create and test it using an editor and then copy it over. Even then, I quite often have to make changes to suit the way in which EW inserts code and a few experiments just plain don’t work!

You don’t so much need to know code (although this helps) as to understand what it does, where to put it and, more important, where not to put it. You also need to know where to put certain pieces of code to increase the overall efficiency of the HTML document.

Following other people’s instructions may not be straight forward - or sensible - if they are not familiar with EW.

The developers obviously don’t have time to answer individual questions about code for features that are not included in EW. I have done my best to do so and my <2000 posts are littered with code examples and links to test pages. I suppose I should try to pull them all together in a website - given the time and patience I will try!

If you have questions about specific features, I would advise you to ask for help in this forum in the “How do I…?” section.

I appreciate your detailed reply, Roddy. It's helpful. I think I've confused coding with the use of snippets which are pretty straightforward. Thanks...
