It does have Spell Check. It's under the Edit menu, the same as all other OS X apps.

Guess I'm used to it being on by default in other OSX apps.... But the functionality of being able to control click or right click on the underlined word to show the correct spelling is not available. It may require Mac OS X 10.7 or later, not entirely sure. Will have to check.

I don't know why you would find it odd that features are not supported in an OS X as old as Snow Leopard. When you do eventually upgrade your OS you will find a whole bunch of your older apps don't work at all.
