Crashes: (When creating a directory)

User: Guest 12 years ago
Yesterday I experienced four crashes in a row when I tried to publish to folder my site I'd created from scratch. Wasn't sure if it was due to the software or mistakes I'd made. [For a full description, see Jonkeba's post in "General Discussion" -"Publishing from a made-from-scratch" site.]

I'm not exactly sure what went wrong. So below I've copied form my longer 'General Discussion' post what was suggested that I do, along with what I actually did. Maybe you can see where I got into trouble. EW asked me to report the crash but in the midst of the crash I didn't see a way so I'm reporting it here. If this isn't the right place let me know.

ISSUE:
Not entirely sure how to put together a Directory when I've created a site from scratch. Most of what I've read seems oriented toward templates. (I realize that when you duplicate a page on the left, what you've got is something like a template. But I'm not sure it's the sort of template referred to in the explanations I've read.)

The thing is, I'm not clear on how to get this Directory together on my made-from-scratch site... Is there, for example, a way to use absolutely no code to make a template that would appear along with the other 'official' templates? I'm guessing there isn't one along the lines of the template-creation technique in iWork Pages.

To get to the point: Say I have a Menu item called "Info." Then say I want to have pages in the submenu titled "Books" "Videos" [and] "Sites" -Can you suggest a simple step-by-step approach-again, without a speck of code- for the absolute beginner (obviously me!) to create this Directory?

RODDY'S RESPONSE ... WHAT I DID:

Roddy: Create your "template" page.

What I did was merely create copies on the LEFT of earlier pages-made three of them-my version of a template. (I don't know how to make a "real" template that would go up in the "real" template section when you start a web site.)

Roddy: Create a directory using a blank white page and name it "info." Leave this page blank.

I did that, got a white blank page with blue directory names in small underlined caps at the top.

Roddy: Duplicate your "template" page as many times as you need to and name these pages "Books", "Videos" and "Sites"

I did that, again over at the far LEFT where the pages are listed.

Roddy: Drag these pages into the directory.

I dragged the pages over into the white space. And I saw the three page titles in small blue capital letters, staggered below across roughly the middle of the blank page on different lines.

When I attempted to publish to a folder, that's when I crashed-about four times. Couldn't fill out the crash report.

Note: This is the sort of issue where I've found in the past it's highly useful to be able to get some kind of live phone tech support. I understand Rage feels free tech support isn't feasible-that it's considered a lot of time is wasted on the phone. On the other hand, I think some sort of phone support for a fee would be extremely worthwhile in a situation where the back and forth of emails might take hours, in an urgent, time-sensitive situation.

Thanks for all your help / John

As pointed out in your other topic, it sounds as if you are dragging the pages into the EasyWeb design area and not into the directory folder in the left column.

Thanks for the clarification.

I am dragging the pages over to the Directory folder on the LEFT and though things are nicely lined up the way they should look in the Navigation menu, I'm still having crashes.

I've tried trashing the old EW file in the Library folder and replacing it with a back up but that doesn't seem to help. Wonder if I've corrupted something? Will try Beta 21 and see if that makes a difference. If installing Beta 21 doesn't work, perhaps I'll need to start all over again?

Have a question about the Navigation menu. Haven't figured out a way to manipulate the colors of the sub folder/items. Text and colors both seem to stay red, Any ideas?

Thanks / John

Select the navigation and then open the Widget inspector to see the Submenu Options...

Thanks-I'd not yet opened the Widget inspector...

So far my Navigation Menu is a series of little boxes. Is there some way-maybe using the widget-to make it a long, wide box without boundaries? See attached example...

I used a shape for the background and then no fill colour for the navigation bar.

Set the value for "spacing" to zero in the Widget inspector to join all the "boxes" together.

You can also set the Color Fill of these "boxes" in the Shape Options to be the same as the page background.

Thanks, guys, for all the suggestions.

Meanwhile, am still getting crashes whenever I publish to folder. Ouch! Have no idea why. Tried everything to prevent them but they've continued, despite installing the new beta and erasing my old directory and sub directories just in case that was the issue. Ran First Aid and reinstalled Lion.

Then I read "If you don't have an account you can create one. Once you create an account you can publish it TO A FOLDER." Any chance this has something to do with my issue? In case it did, I tried to register but a fee was being asked and I knew that unless I was publishing to EasyWeb there wouldn't be a fee until the final release.

Would appreciate your help in troubleshooting this.

Thanks / John

As noted in my email to you I need you to send me the crash report you get when you publish to a folder. The crash report you sent me previously was from trying to launch a version of EasyWeb from over two months ago that will no longer work.

There is no way for me to have even the slightest idea as to why it is crashing without seeing your crash report.

Crash reports can be found in the User library in the Home folder.

If you are running OS X 10.7/10.8, open the Finder Go drop down menu and hold down the Option key then click "Library".

The crash reports are in Logs/DiagnosticReports so the full path is ...

~Library/Logs/CrashReports

A crash report will look like this...

Double click it to open and check the TIME and DATE to select the latest one.

You can zip it by selecting it and then selecting Compress in the Finder File menu so that you can attach it to an email.
