Navigating an eCommerce site: Product category>sub category>sub sub category>product>

User: Chris P. 6 years ago
Hello...
Darned if I can remember where I saw how to do this, and it's hard to search for when you can't remember the name of it!!

Many eCommerce sites with LOTS of products use a navigation convention at the top of a product page that looks a lot like this:
Product category>sub category>sub sub category>product>

For example, https://www.globalindustrial.com/g/storage/cabinets/heavy-duty/global-all-welded-heavy-duty-12-gauge-storage-cabinets?trackType=0. Look at the top, under the menu. It shows how this particular cabinet is found on their site.

1) What is this called?
2) How do I do it? I can do this manually, but its a lot of work, and I know I'll forget to change all the links when I update pages. Is there a way to do it automatically? Yes, I am already organizing my products into directories.

thanks, Chris

Hi Chris!

The leveled URL you gave a link to is created by organizing the site into directories and subdirectories. So you actually already doing a right thing, there's nothing else you can or need to do. It shows how the files are stored on the server, i.e. just like files and folders placed inside other folders.

Thanks Wayne...right, orgainzing into directories and subdirectories. But is there an automated way to put this on each page, or do I have to just type out the information and create links for each part manually? (Which means every time I change a page, or add pages, I have to go through all of them and make sure they are all "pointing" in the right places).

The example site you referenced uses breadcrumbs for navigation - as do most large sites.

The Breadcrumbs widget has options for navigating to directories and sub directories. The demo only shows a directory but there is the option to add a sub directory.
