Viewing Image sharpness problems

Image sharpness problems

User: Jeff K. 6 years ago
I have a film photography website. I'm still using EverWeb version 1.9.0 because my images look less sharp in newer versions. I contacted EverWeb support when I noticed this problem after updating from 1.9.0 a couple years ago. They could not find an answer. Recently a tech support member said the latest update (2.5.1) should have resolved any sharpness issues. Today I downloaded it and when I called up my website the images were a little fuzzy. Before I even published the site. Anyone else having these issues?

I've included two screenshots of the same photo, one using version 1.9.0, the other 2.5.1.

Another concern: when I stopped by the Apple Store today I opened my EverWeb site on a new 27-inch Mac retina screen. Those images weren't sharp either. At home I have a 27-inch Mac that's seven years old. I still run an older OS, Snow Leopard. My EverWeb images are tack sharp with version 1.9.0. I also have a retina iPad, and they look fine too.

I posted a ticket today with EverWeb support. Hope they can help me solve this sharpness riddle.

I solved the sharpness issue above by re-dragging the image from the assets window in 1.9.0 (I usually drag images from my computer desktop). Then I opened 2.5.1 and the images looked identical. Great. But then I opened my EverWeb site on a Mac retina screen at work (don't have one at home) and most of the images on my site looked crappy. A co-worker suggested I use 300 dpi instead of 144. Another said my film images might be too large for retina displays.

So I'm at an impasse again. Is there an EverWeb tech person I could hire to work with me over the phone to solve this retina issue. I have a lot of photos on my site and my biggest worry is that I'll have to re-edit and re-size every one, and that will take weeks. My URL: jeffkingphotography.net

To display an image at retina quality the image file needs to be imported @2x.

For example, the image on this page has a file size of 548px by 770px and is displayed at 548px by 770px.

For retina quality, the image should be imported at 1096px by 1540px and displayed at 548px by 770px.

For the mobile version of the site, use the original 548px by 770px image and display it at 274px by 385px.

Thanks Roddy! That image was taken with a 35mm film camera. Most images on my EverWeb photography site were taken with a medium-format film camera. The negatives are three times larger than 35mm. Plus I scan them at 4800 dpi so the files are big. For web I retain those file dimensions and edit them at 144 resolution. The lead shot on my website (www.jeffkingphotography.net) is 6638 pixels by 9024 pixels. I had a different image on my lead page over the weekend that was 8182 x 7024 pixels. I visited the Apple Store Sunday and it looked a little blurred on the new Mac retina displays. Any suggestions? I still use EverWeb 1.9.0 because I have similar image issues in newer versions (images lose sharpness when I resize them by dragging a corner).

EverWeb suggested I try publishing in version 2.5.1 to see if images would look sharper on retina (I don't have retina at home, but wanted to try anyway). I called up my site in 2.5.1 AND the older 1.9.0 and put them side by side before publishing. The 2.5.1 images aren't as sharp. What's up with that? This is driving me crazy.

Here's a demo page with two versions of the same image inserted using the Image Insert widget.

Both images are inserted with the same container size but one has twice the resolution of the other.

Roddy, will your widget help images look sharper on new retina displays? Even though I have large image files, which I thought would translate well to retina, how does your widget work? Thank you.

I put a new film shot (large image file) on my EverWeb site in 1.9.0. Tack sharp. When I open 2.5.1 the image is blurry. Frustrating.

A widget simply inserts the image at the same resolution that it was imported at.

If an image is imported at 1200 x 800 px, and the widget is adjusted to the same size, the image will be displayed @1x.

If the widget is set to 600px x 400px, the image will be displayed @2x.

This assumes that the JPEG Image Quality is set correctly in Preferences.
