How do I "disavow" incoming links?

User: Daniel B. 7 years ago
My EverWeb site, hosted by Everweb, has been linked to by dozens of websites from Eastern Europe. Many of them are porn sites. They link to my 404 page for some reason.

I think this might be called "referring spam" and it is some kind of SEO from these shady websites.

I think you can't control who links to your website.

I think the solution is to "disavow" these links in HTML-?

I had a consultant tell me to "Get the hell off of Everweb and get onto Wordpress."

But I like Everweb! What can I do?

HI Daniel,

Yes, this is a common thing for people to try and do.

Disavowing links is not something that is connected to your web development tool, you would do it in your Google Search Console account. Here is Google's instructions for disavowing links;

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487

Remember, this has nothing to do with your web building tool whether it is EverWeb, WordPress or something else.

The benefit of EverWeb is that is doesn't get hacked every few weeks like WordPress does which opens you up to more serious issues and it is a design tool, which WordPress is not so you would have to actually edit HTML/CSS and java script code if you wanted to customize your website's theme

I hope this helps!

Paul,

Thank you.

I love Everweb as a design tool. But you guys are also my hosting site. Shouldn't there be a feature where I can select incoming links and disavow them, as a feature of your hosting plan?

I dunno. I'm just asking. Like a lot of your customers, I would think, I'm all about not having to look at a damn line of code.

Thanks!

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the feedback.

The thing about disavowing links is that it doesn't have anything to do with your web host.

It's something controlled by Google and something they need to know about.

In my opinion it's not something a web master should have to do but unfortunately it's something Google requires now.

If we could offer such a feature, we would love to, but It's Google's system and not ours.

I hope this explanation makes sense as to what needs to be done in this case
